About the role

The Deputy Director, Policy & Impact will play a pivotal role in our non-profit organization, focusing on fundraising, grant writing, and resident service oversight. This role will be instrumental in identifying and securing funding opportunities to support our resident services, impact activities, and development team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in grant writing and management, excellent written communication skills, and experience with CDFI fund programs and HUD programs. Experience in raising philanthropic dollars from individuals and/or foundations is also highly desirable. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and be passionate about making meaningful change. 

This role reports to the SVP, Policy & Impact. The ideal candidate is located in or around the Washington DC area. However, we are open to remote employees. Company headquarters are in Santa Monica, California, and candidates throughout the United States are encouraged to apply. Some travel is required.

Requirements

What You'll Do

  • Leads fundraising activities, identifying, researching, and securing funding sources to support resident services and impact activities, including developing and submitting public funding proposals and reports. 
  • Oversees business development and strategic partnerships with third-party non-profit organizations, philanthropic partners, and other developers to grow the organization. 
  • Oversees the delivery and expansion of resident services, ensuring they meet the needs of our community and manages relationships with third-party Resident Service Coordinator (RSC) partners. 
  • Manages and reports on ESG and other relevant metrics, ensuring compliance with funding requirements. 
  • Develops and implements a platform for RSCs to enhance service delivery and identifies and develops new programs to fill gaps in service delivery. 
  • Manages Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with partners and stakeholders, and assists in writing Request for Proposals (RFPs) for RAD deals or other opportunities. 
  • Develops and implements strategies to raise funds from individuals and foundations, and contributes to the strategic planning and direction of the organization. 
  • Supervises and mentors staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment, and oversees the budget for resident services and fundraising activities. 
  • Builds and manages strong relationships and partnerships with all stakeholders, including residents, partners, third-party non-profit partners, and funders, to build strong relationships and partnerships that further the mission and strategic objectives of the non-profit. 
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to support effective service delivery and fundraising,. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

What You'll Bring

  • Demonstrates proven experience in identifying, securing, and managing fundraising opportunities, including experience in fundraising from high net worth individuals and foundations. 
  • Effective business development skills, including relationship management, marketing through storytelling and networking, and negotiation. Able to create key relationships that support the expansion of the non-profit.   
  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to write compelling proposals and reports, and shows experience in overseeing and developing programs. 
  • Displays ability to contribute to the organization's strategic direction, identifying opportunities for growth and improvement, and exhibits strong relationship-building skills. 
  • Familiar with CDFI fund programs and HUD programs, this knowledge is highly desirable and demonstrates strong research, planning, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Exhibits excellent time management and organizational skills with attention to detail, and can make independent judgments and decisions regarding funding opportunities. 
  • Demonstrates understanding of affordable housing; this knowledge is preferred and promotes an environment of empathy and respect, ensuring the inclusion of all team members. 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent experience in a relevant position. 
  • Minimum of 6+ years of experience with grant writing, fund research, and reporting required. Experience in and knowledge of the nonprofit sector, community development, or real estate is strongly preferred.
