The Director, Value-Based Contracting is responsible for leading the strategy, design, and execution of innovative value-based reimbursement models across the provider network and all lines of business. This role focuses heavily on contract development, financial modeling, and program architecture—ensuring that value-based arrangements support the organization’s goals around cost containment, quality improvement, and provider alignment. The Director will work closely with internal teams and external provider partners to establish sustainable, scalable value-based programs that drive healthcare transformation.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the end-to-end development of value-based contracts, including shared savings, quality improvement, downside risk, total cost of care, bundled payments, and capitation models.
  • Draft and negotiate contract terms related to payment methodologies, performance metrics, attribution models, and reconciliation processes.
  • Define attribution logic, quality measure sets, performance targets, and payment methodologies.
  • Develop standardized VBP frameworks while allowing customization by market or provider type (e.g., health systems, ACOs, IPAs).
  • Identify, assess, and prioritize provider groups for VBP participation based on readiness, performance, and strategic alignment.
  • Act as a strategic partner to high-value providers, helping co-develop program approaches that support mutual success.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Actuarial, and Finance to ensure contract terms are financially sound, compliant, and aligned with organizational risk tolerance.
  • Work with internal teams (e.g., Actuarial, Quality, Population Health, Healthcare Economics) to support contract development and implementation.
  • Guide internal education and alignment around VBP models, contract design choices, and implications for operational workflows.
  • Participate in contract performance reviews and recommend program design changes based on emerging insights or provider feedback
  • Stay well-informed of industry trends related to valued-based programs and advise senior management of trends and issues that impact JHP.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in Business, Healthcare, or related Liberal Arts discipline.

AND

Experience:

  • 5-10 years of experience in healthcare contracting or network strategy
  • 3-5 years of focused experience in value-based or alternative payment model design
  • Strong track record of developing complex VBP agreements with health systems, ACOs, or IPAs
  • Experience working within or in close partnership with actuarial and finance teams to define payment models
