Description
The Middle American Research Institute (MARI) at Tulane University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position specializing in Geographic Information Science with a focus on remote sensing technologies, including lidar. The appointment is for one year and may be renewable up to 5 years contingent on satisfactory performance.
The GDH Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow will provide technical assistance and consultation for faculty and students using GIS and other geospatial software and hardware in the MARI GIS lab. The fellow's expertise will include applying new spatial analytical technologies to enhance understanding and modeling of ancient land and water use, population dynamics, human-environmental interactions, political ecologies, societal structure, sustainability, spatial justice, and related issues.
The fellow will support Tulane University's leadership in archaeology by contributing to the development and maintenance of mission-critical geospatial data in the MARI GIS Lab for an international community of researchers. They will build a community of collaborating researchers at Tulane and other institutions by providing support and expertise related to spatial technologies and their applications in archaeology.
The fellow will have opportunities to assist with proposal development and project budgets for the maintenance and expansion of the MARI GIS lab facility while pursuing their own research agenda. Faculty in the Middle American Research Institute and Department of Anthropology will provide mentorship to the fellow, including access to research networks and opportunities to share and receive feedback on their work.
Responsibilities
· Provide technical assistance and consultation for faculty and students using GIS and other geospatial software and hardware in the MARI GIS lab
· Support geospatial information technology, hardware, software, and data systems for research and teaching activities
· Maintain the licensing, access, functioning, and scalability of hardware and software in support of the research goals of Tulane faculty and students
· Build a community of collaborating researchers at Tulane and other institutions by providing support and expertise related to spatial technologies and their applications in archaeology
· Support the development and maintenance of mission-critical geospatial data in the MARI GIS Lab for an international community of researchers
· Assist with proposal development and project budgets for the maintenance and expansion of the MARI GIS lab facility
· Support students' and technicians' research activities in the MARI GIS Lab
· Pursue independent scholarly research and writing
Qualifications
· PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Remote Sensing
· Expertise in remote sensing technology
· Ability to manage a computer network
· Knowledge of social science applications to remote sensing
· Ability to train and teach both undergraduates and graduate students
· An ability to manage multiple projects concurrently (preferred)
· An ability to administer grant funds (preferred)
· A willingness and ability to apply for grants (preferred)
