With approximately 5,800 employees serving more than 50 countries around the world, Domtar is driven by a commitment to turn sustainable wood fiber into useful products that people rely on every day.  Our mill in Plymouth, NC has a need for an experienced Assistant Superintendent for our NC5 Fluff Pulp Machine.

Job Summary:

This role is responsible for all aspects for the NC5 Fluff Pulp machine including but not limited to safety, quality, cost, and productivity. The Assistant Superintendent coordinates the efforts of the team to ensure fluff pulp machine operation is safe, efficient, and organized. The Assistant Superintendent will coordinate with maintenance supervision to plan maintenance work for the fluff pulp machine. May serve as departmental leader when the machine Superintendent are out of pocket. Also, based on need of the mill and crew, the incumbent may be required to fill in for Team Leads on shift rotation. The ideal candidate will have advanced process knowledge and experience with a fluff pulp machine. 


Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance Planning
• Collaborates with Maintenance and Operational work teams regarding equipment maintenance / repairs and outages.
• Planning of maintenance downtime and cost.
• Assist in development of operating budget and capital expenditure projects.
• Manages cost control of their respective area in the operating budget.
• Decides on remedial action to resolve issues affecting employees or production with respect to safety, quality, environment, or throughput.
• Achieve target results for efficiency, downtime and production.

Organizational Effectiveness
• Supports day-to-day operations of hourly work teams.
• Engages and inspires team members by promoting an inclusive culture and promoting team-based decision making.

Process Optimization
• Works with CI, departmental management, Maintenance and Operational Team Leaders to identify / implement process improvements and cost reduction projects to achieve desired results.

Quality
• Works with Quality Manager, departmental management, and Operational work teams to identify root-cause of off-quality events and drives permanent solutions.

Safety
• Be a safety advocate for the mill, lead by example.
• Drive team efforts to identify root cause of issues, identify permanent corrective actions, document in mill-wide database, and provide follow-up.

Required Qualifications:
• A BS Degree in Engineering OR 10+ years of experience working on a pulp or paper machine
• Demonstrated leadership competency and experience
• Strong understanding of papermaking processes

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in a union mill applying concepts of a collective bargaining agreement.
• Innovative – implements process or design changes to improve operation of department.
• High degree of collaboration with mill leadership
• Proficient planning and organization skills

Competencies for Success
• Ability to prioritize time and multi-task.
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels within the mill.
• Good computer software skills.
• Knowledge of Parcview and QIS systems.
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing and related tools.
