The Radiological Control Department is looking for a high performing individual with an attention to detail and with exceptional communication skills to serve as a Principal Radiation Safety Specialist – Health Physics Equipment Team Lead for the Radiological Control Department. 

Key Responsibilities

• Direct daily operations within the Health Physics Equipment Department; ensuring equipment accuracy, traceability to national standards, and compliance with DOE and NNSS regulations. 
• Coordinate with radiological control technicians and health physicists in the design and implementation of programs requiring instrumentation. 
• Mentor technical personnel responsible for inspection, calibration, and maintenance of health physics instrumentation used for radiological monitoring and control.
• Develop and implement standardized procedures for handling and calibrating a broad range of radiation detection equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability across all measurement activities.
• Investigate equipment anomalies and operational disruptions, initiate corrective actions, and implement workflow modifications to maintain optimal equipment performance.
• Maintain comprehensive records of calibration reports, instrument repair logs, and procedural documentation in accordance with NNSS and DOE requirements.
• Advise internal and external stakeholders including MSTS, LANL, LLNL, and DOE on instrument capabilities, limitations, calibration status, and operational readiness.
• Initiate and track issues identified in equipment use and procedural compliance; provide recommendations for corrective measures and procedural improvements.
• Establish, monitor, and analyze key performance metrics, including calibration status, instrument availability, and equipment lifecycle effectiveness.
• Support training programs and procedural development for health physics equipment users, incorporating best-practice guidelines, safety updates, and operational enhancements.
• Ensure rigorous quality control of calibration data, including review of test records, application of verification protocols, and adherence to standardized documentation practices.
• Facilitate collaborative troubleshooting sessions to resolve persistent or atypical equipment failures, embedding lessons learned into technician training and procedural updates.
• Oversee implementation and use of calibration software systems, training staff on user interface functionality, data entry standards, uncertainty analysis tools, and results validation workflows.
• Support budgeting and resource forecasting, identifying staffing, maintenance, and equipment needs to sustain calibration operations and meet mission schedules. 
• Foster personal accountability and safety culture, modeling safety principles in all calibration and maintenance activities, and empowering the team to recognize and report hazards. 
• Perform other duties as assigned to ensure continued operation of the Health Physics Equipment Department and meet evolving safety and instrument needs.
• Formulate and manage qualification criteria for health physics equipment technicians.
• Champion audits and internal evaluations of HPE department programs, institute process efficiencies, and identify personnel and growth opportunities.
