San Diego State University is seeking an Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist to help advance a culture of health, safety, and well-being across campus. In this role, you'll partner with faculty, staff, and campus departments to identify workplace hazards, develop practical solutions, and support programs that protect the SDSU community.
As the University's subject matter expert in occupational safety and industrial hygiene, you'll support a broad range of initiatives, including indoor air quality, respiratory protection, ergonomics, exposure assessments, medical surveillance, and safety training. This position offers the opportunity to combine technical expertise with collaboration, education, and continuous improvement while helping shape a safe and healthy campus environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate occupational safety and industrial hygiene programs, including indoor air quality, respiratory protection, ergonomics, and medical surveillance.
- Conduct workplace hazard assessments, inspections, and exposure evaluations while partnering with departments to recommend practical safety solutions.
- Develop and deliver safety training and technical guidance that supports regulatory compliance and a culture of prevention.
- Support hazardous waste activities and collaborate with consultants, contractors, and campus partners on environmental health and safety initiatives.

Position Information
- Full-time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- Position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
