Sr. Staff Engineer, Transportation & Last Mile

Role Overview

Coupang relies on technology to provide on-time, fast delivery of products to customers every day. Coupang's Transportation and Last Mile technology organization is responsible for building technology that ensures that Customers orders are fulfilled as per the promise date with lowest cost. Transportation and Last Mile systems are responsible for First Mile, Sortation, Line-haul Transportation and Last Mile including geospatial data. Building highly available and scalable systems to handle billions of order & delivery transactions and support Coupang’s rapidly growing Product Commerce business is a complex architectural challenge. With focus on “Coupang as a Logistics Carrier” this challenge has gotten bigger. To deliver on this challenge, we are looking for an experienced and passionate technical leader who can drive direction on technology, design and build large-scale, multi-tiered, distributed software solutions. The ideal candidate will have excellent engineering skills, business sense, and rich experience leading the build of extensible and scalable solutions to solve complex business features. This role directly reports to the leader of the Transportation and Last Mile engineering organization.

What You Will Do

• Lead and drive architecture and design of Transportation and Last Mile systems for scale, future extensibility, and reliability.

• Envision and drive alignment with stakeholders of the appropriate roadmap and future direction of technology for Transportation and Last Mile Org.

• Navigate and alleviate technical obstacles and blockers at the organizational level.

• Decompose complex problems into simple, straightforward solutions, providing mechanisms for the teams to prioritize ruthlessly and “move with urgency.”

• Successfully champion collaboration and influence with tech leaders both within Transportation Tech Org and other Coupang engineering organizations.

• Deep dive to uncover how teams can work with higher efficiency

• Write code when necessary to lead by example and help with high priority projects

• Proactively identify opportunities in both business and technology

• Review, advise, and carry out the adoption of innovative technology (both open-source and commercial) that are useful in achieving business objectives

• Recruit and develop world-class engineering talent.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in software development at technology companies

• Solid track record of delivering large and complex systems with significant business impact

• Experience of designing and developing large-scale distributed systems and architectures

• 10+ years of experience in developing and operating highly scalable, reliable and consistent backend services and web applications.

• Broad and deep understanding of key technologies in storage, data processing, event processing and serving.

• Excellent communications and collaborations across teams and across functionalities

• Service development and operational experience in an AWS environment

• Experience driving improvements in code quality

• Experience working on Transportation and Last mile systems in e-commerce or quick commerce organizations would be preferable.

• Experience in automating build/test/deploy

• Experience with bulk data processing using NoSQL
