About the role

*** Please note, position is contingent upon award ***

Amentum is a leading provider of engineering, scientific, and program management support services to some of the top agencies in the U.S. government, including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the intelligence community.

The mission of DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office (TTO) is to reimagine every aspect of military hardware design, development, test, manufacture, and sustainment – with a focus on rapid, affordable, and scalable deployment – to create and prevent technological surprise.  TTO’s goal is to demonstrate compelling hardware at the smallest scale that traces to disruptive capability, with designs that reduce risk and cost by managing complexity and can be manufactured responsively and affordably.  Additional information on TTO is available here: https://www.darpa.mil/about/offices/tto.

Amentum is seeking a mid-level systems engineer to apply systems and mission engineering principles for the development of advanced defense and space systems.  This is a full-time position with the requirement to work on-site at the client location (Ballston neighborhood of Arlington, VA).  Some domestic travel (~25%) may be required.  Annual salary ranges between $150-200K depending on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Applying structured, top-down systems engineering methods to design and integrate complex defense systems, translating operational needs into technical requirements, architectures, and engineering solutions

  • Applying mission engineering methodologies to assess operational environments, identify capability gaps, and evaluate technical solutions using operational analysis, modeling and simulation, and mission threads

  • Integrating operational analysis, modeling and simulation, and mission thread development to inform system design and technology investment decisions

  • Developing and managing technology roadmaps to guide the maturation, integration, and transition of emerging technologies aligned with future mission needs and evolving threat environments

  • Applying direct technical knowledge in specialized national security domains such as space operations, missile defense, long-range fires, or related strategic capabilities, as well employing an understanding of operational concepts, system architectures, and emerging technologies to support advanced defense missions

  • Leveraging knowledge of the full lifecycle of advanced research and development programs, from concept development and requirements definition through prototyping, testing, evaluation, and transition to operational capability

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in an engineering, scientific, or technological discipline

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience

  • Active Secret security clearance. Please note US citizenship is required to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

  • Knowledge of systems engineering lifecycle and requirements management

  • Experience developing, managing, and verifying system requirements, ensuring traceability from operational needs through system-level design and implementation while supporting integration into existing or future operational architectures

  • Experience operating in fast-paced environments that emphasize rapid prototyping, iterative development, and accelerated capability delivery

  • Experience supporting defense R&D or rapid prototyping programs

  • Experience leading cross-functional technical teams

  • The demonstrated ability to coordinate and lead technical efforts across diverse stakeholders including government organizations, military services, national laboratories, and industry partners to develop and field advanced capabilities

  • The demonstrated ability to manage cost, schedule, and performance of technical programs

  • Experience working with DoD stakeholders, combatant commands, and defense industry partners

  • Providing overarching support to program to include, as needed, attending biweekly calls for performers, attending major reviews, drafting programmatic documentation for DARPA and transition partners, attending transition partner meetings and internal DARPA team meetings
