Job Description

NBC News is looking for an experienced and digitally-savvy politics editor to power the expansion of campaign, election and Washington coverage within the network’s political unit. 

This editor will play a lead role in developing and driving new editorial offerings, as well as assign and edit across existing digital platforms, including the Meet the Press blog.  The editor will be required to work across the organization, will have 1 - 2 direct reports and serve as a leader across the unit.

You would also work alongside the team that produces the longest-running show in TV history, Meet the Press, which has a growing portfolio of editorial products that are powering the network’s coverage of this fall’s midterms, the 2024 elections and other debates dominating American politics.

The best candidate will have a strong command of American politics, impeccable news judgement, a knack for sharp headline writing, a passion for driving scoop-driven coverage and an entrepreneurial streak. This person must be able to work collaboratively and build bridges with other teams around the network, from TV correspondents to bureau chiefs to NBC News Digital. 


Key responsibilities: 

  • Conceptualize, assign and edit political coverage in collaboration with other editors
  • Lead and determine reporting and publishing targets for 3 political reporters with a strategic focus on formats and audiences
  • Elevate pitches and reporting lines into must-read journalism that appeals to a savvy audience
  • Experiment with new forms of storytelling and incorporate audio and video into text-based coverage
  • Collaborate across editorial teams in a highly matrixed organization

Qualifications

  • At least six – seven years of experience covering, writing and/or editing national politics for a nationally recognized newspaper, magazine or website
  • Experience writing, producing or launching newsletters or a demonstrated interest in newsletters is a plus.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, news judgment and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Deep understanding of the political landscape
  • Candidates should be creative, collaborative and entrepreneurial
  • Interest and experience in managing reporters
  • Highly motivated and collaborative
  • Position is based on Washington, DC
