About the role

Senior Counsel, Employment and Labor

This position will be responsible for providing strategic advice to Human Resources (HR) and company managers in all areas of employment law and labor law. This person will also partner with HR to develop and implement strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance and align with emerging legal and regulatory requirements.

This position will be based in our Hoboken, NJ office and requires a motivated self-starter who can work with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment. Occasional travel may be required.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide advice and counsel on employment and labor law issues including hiring, discipline, termination, pay and benefits in both union and nonunion environments.
  • Review and provide advice on drafting and development of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with complex and rapidly changing federal, state and local employment laws.
  • Defend employment and related claims, including the response to administrative charges and inquiries from governmental agencies and handling attorney letters and claims.
  • Research, review and counsel HR and management on handling employee and labor relations matters, including ADA, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA, FCRA, drug testing, restrictive covenants and employment discrimination issues, as well as on union grievance processes.
  • Prepare, review and deliver training programs on a wide variety of employment and labor law matters.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Current member in good standing of the New Jersey bar or ability to register as in-house counsel.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in a corporate legal department and/or law firm.
  • In house experience preferred.
  • Must have experience counseling clients on employment and labor law matters, and experience advising in a unionized environment.
  • Must possess excellent analytical ability and advocacy skills; and have the ability to propose legally and commercially viable solutions.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, negotiation skills; a positive attitude and the ability to work constructively in a team environment.
  • Developed business insight, with ability to understand the company's business and anticipate the nature and magnitude of issues that could arise.
  • Ability to work under time pressure and to meet short deadlines.
  • Ability to supervise outside counsel when needed.

Pay: The pay range for this position is $138,900 to $208,300. Unilever takes into consideration a wide range of factors that are utilized in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, qualifications and education, and other business and organizational needs.

Bonus: This position is bonus eligible.

Long-Term Incentive (LTI): This position is LTI eligible.
