This is a highly visible role, for a resilient leader who can navigate the agility of a changing landscape, while partnering cross-functionally across the business to ensure EHS scalability as we grow.
What You Will Contribute To Altos
As a key member of our Legal and Compliance Team, the Director, EHS (US), will be responsible for building and sustaining an EHS culture that reduces risk, ensures regulatory compliance and supports operations at both of Altos’ California sites. This role will be responsible for managing and developing the onsite EHS Manager at the Bay Area CA site and for working seamlessly with the EHS (UK) team on global initiatives, systems and practices as needed.
This role will act as the primary safety subject matter expert to protect employees and the environment. Additionally, this role will represent the Altos California sites on EHS matters to regulatory agencies, inspectors, partners, and project teams, working closely with other functions, consultants, and contractors as required.
Responsibilities
Working under the leadership of the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, this role has a mix of hands-on daily work, as well as leadership for California site activities and requirements, including, but not limited to:
- Compliance and Risk Management. Strong working knowledge to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA) and maintaining site risk registry.
- Safety Leadership. Extensive leadership experience within EHS roles to drive a proactive safety culture, lead safety committees, lead/participate in cross-functional teams and initiatives to drive continuous improvement. Provide accessible and engaging training to employees and act as Biosafety Officer for CA sites.
- Incident Management. Manage and investigate incidents, near-misses, and environmental releases, and implement corrective actions.
- Technical Deliverables and Oversight. Builds EHS capabilities and infrastructure as needed; conduct risk assessments and internal inspections; maintain required records and permits; ensure timely reporting to regulatory agencies; manage hazards and hazardous waste (chemical, biological, ergonomic, and others as needed); maintain CA occupational safety and industrial hygiene programs; plan and coordinate emergency drills and emergency response team preparation activities; perform other tasks as needed.
- Performance Metrics. Track Safety KPIs (leading and lagging), report to management, and drive continuous improvement across all programs and activities with pragmatism.
- Onsite Presence. This is an onsite role at our San Diego site with no hybrid or remote working. Travel to our Bay Area site is required.
Who You Are
Minimum Qualifications
- Professional Certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Bachelor’s degree in physical science, engineering or safety discipline. Advanced degree a plus.
- Minimum of (10) ten years of experience in EHS, with demonstrated experience in a leadership role.
- Experience with developing and implementing EHS programs, ideally for biotech (particularly in pharmaceutical/drug development) startup laboratory operations.
- Deep knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements relating to health
