Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Forestry is seeking a strategic-minded leader to provide oversight for the agency’s Central Region. The position reports to the Chief of Operations.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
-Supervising the Deputy Regional Forester, Water Quality Engineer, Regional Mechanic, and two (2) Program Support Technicians assigned to the Central Region
-Managing and overseeing agency administrative and operational programs to include procurement, budgeting, fleet and facility management, safety, fire & emergency response, forest management, forested watersheds, and enforcement of Virginia's silvicultural water quality laws.
-Serving on the agency's Senior Management Team with primary role in statewide planning and strategic decision making
-Using comprehensive knowledge of state, federal, and agency policies and procedures and budget process for implementation in the Central Region.
-Providing direction and guidance regarding implementation of the agency's strategic plan
-Establishing regional goals and benchmarks and evaluating performance
-Ensuring personnel assigned to the region receive the appropriate training and professional development required to perform their jobs at an exceptional level
-Representing the agency at the regional level by fostering positive relationships among partner groups, organizations, and other stakeholders

Location: This position will be assigned to the DOF's Central Regional Office located in Charlottesville, VA. Limited teleworking options are available (typically 1 day a week). Although commuting from home with a state-owned vehicle is not permitted for this position, one will be assigned and parked at the Regional Office to travel to locations away from the office.

Minimum Qualifications

Significant experience in the forestry profession and supervision of forestry staff and operations; experience in natural resource planning, business administration, public administration or policy; substantial leadership skills, including those necessary for effective planning, organizing, supervision, budget management, and directing business needs in an open and decisive manner; ability to coordinate and supervise wildfire suppression and have a working knowledge of fire behavior and suppression tactics; a broad knowledge of silvicultural practices and techniques; experience working with partner groups or organizations; a comprehensive knowledge of all programs administered by the DOF; demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state and local government agencies, cooperators, forestry consultants, forest industry, non-profit organizations, volunteer groups, and the public; excellent organization and planning skills; proficiency using a PC and Microsoft Office software; able to negotiate different types of forested terrain on foot.

Additional Considerations

Significant supervisory experience working for a state forestry agency; graduation from the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institutes' Commonwealth Management Institute (or equivalent)

Must hold a Virginia Pesticide Applicators License or be able to obtain one within 12 months of employment. This position is not considered an initial responder for wildland fire or other emergency response situations. However, the selected candidate is expected to be on-call during Spring and Fall Fire Seasons to direct or support emergency response activities. Selected candidate is required to pass a criminal background check. In accordance with the Code of Virginia, to utilize the title of "regional forester" one must have received a baccalaureate or higher degree from a Society of American Foresters accredited degree program. Otherwise, the successful candidate will use the title of "regional manager."
