The Opportunity

This position works out of our Alameda, CA location in the Abbott Diabetes Care Division, where we are focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions. We’re revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.   

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Manager, Software Engineering to play a key role in Abbott’s R&D embedded software design organization. In this position, you will provide technical leadership to the software engineering team; you will provide guidance for the design and development of company products, work closely with the software team, senior management and cross-functional managers to manage software development efforts. This position reports to the Director of Software Development within R&D. #software

What you’ll work on

  • Provides leadership to design/development teams to keep focus.
  • Work with Senior Management to provide design/development teams with appropriate resources to perform assigned tasks.
  • Keeps senior management team informed of design/development progress and issues.
  • Establishes Software Development plans and schedules. Works with cross-functional team and management to establish and execute on product development objectives on all major product development initiatives which involve software.
  • Represents Software Development team in cross-functional meetings. Presents status of software development activities, challenges and cross-functional dependencies.
  • Hires and retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and provides ongoing performance feedback. Sets goals which align to department plans and manages the execution of goals through coaching and mentoring. Maintains a safe and professional work environment. Provides mentorship and career development oversight for direct report employees. Interfaces with appropriate internal and external resources (regulatory, customers, etc.) to ensure development programs meet regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Guides development, training and implementation of software standard operating procedures and work instructions.
  • Reviews and provides functional approval for project and quality system documentation.
  • Interfaces with appropriate internal and external resources to ensure intellectual property is appropriately protected.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Four-year degree in a technical field, preferably electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering. Masters in engineering or science preferred.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in device development and/or other highly regulated industry
  • Experience in leading device software architectural designs and full lifecycle of embedded software development.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
