About the role

 

Summary

The Tax Director is responsible for evaluating and documenting the appropriate Tax treatment of the new investments, identifying tax risks/costs and reviewing applicable legal documents as well as tax operational onboarding of such new investments.  This position will also be responsible for understanding and documenting accounting treatments as part of initial investment evaluation.   This position will play a significant role in the Company’s ability to expeditiously act on new investment opportunities.   The successful candidate will work with the AVP, Tax in providing timely analysis and documentation with regard to various tax research projects.

Organization

Reports to the AVP, Tax.  This individual will be a subject matter expert and manage this function with no direct reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide tax technical analysis to the AVP, Tax on specific new investments that will support the company’s evaluation of the investment that will include for quantifying and identifying tax risks/costs related to new investments
  • Prepare tax research memos documenting the tax conclusions, including documenting the understanding of accounting treatment 
  • Collaborate with AVP, Investment Taxation and other functional areas (e.g. Investment Accounting, Middle Office, Legal, Financial Reporting, Financial Advisory) to perform operational onboarding of new investments
  • Responsible for reviewing legal documents related to the new investments to provide understanding of the nature of the investment and identify any tax issues that need to be addressed
  • Provide tax technical analysis on the complex or unusual transactions related to the existing portfolios, including but not limited to derivatives, structured bonds, limited partnerships, hedging, swaps, LITHC, mortgages and alternative investments
  • Research, analyze, quantify and document tax implications of Company’s material tax positions as well as provide research support for the tax department.
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and CPA
  • Minimum of 8 years of tax experience required with 2 years in a corporate tax department
  • 3 years investment-related tax experience
  • Requires strong technical skills with respect to the interpretation and application of complex technical matters in the accounting, compliance areas within the Insurance industry
  • Knowledgeable about tax accounting and compliance issues associated with investments in partnerships and other financial products
  • Prior experience with reviewing various documents (i.e., partnership agreements, loan documents etc.)
  • International experience a plus

  • Willingness and enthusiasm to learn/train in skills needed to support the Tax Department
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects
