The Senior Auditor plays a key role in leading and executing complex financial, operational, compliance, and data-driven audits at Argonne National Laboratory.
This position is responsible for planning audit engagements, performing data analytics, and providing assurance and advisory services that strengthen risk management, governance, and internal control processes. The Senior Auditor works closely with Principal Auditor and the Chief Audit Executive to deliver high-impact audit results aligned with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Standards and federal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and execution of audits across financial, operational, and compliance functions in accordance with IIA Standards.
- Perform and direct data analytics to identify control gaps, inefficiencies, fraud risks, and emerging issues.
- Evaluate the design and effectiveness of internal controls related to DOE Orders, FAR, and federal compliance requirements.
- Lead audits of cost allowability, subcontractor oversight, procurement, indirect cost allocations, and research compliance.
- Review the work of Staff Auditors, providing technical guidance and developmental feedback.
- Prepare audit reports with audit findings, recommendations, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Conduct follow-up reviews and validate the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Internal Audit function, including audit methodology, automation, and analytics capabilities.
This position is mostly on-site and requires the ability to maintain a minimum of three-day per week on-site presence at the Argonne National Laboratory site in Lemont, Illinois. The first 30 days will require an on-site presence of 4 days per week.

Position Requirements
Required Qualifications
- PA3: Bachelor's degree and a 4+ years of experience, or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Data Analytics, Statistics or a related field deemed appropriate by the Chief Audit Executive.
- 4+ years of progressive experience in internal audit, public accounting, government auditing, or federal contracting environments.
- Strong knowledge of auditing standards, internal control frameworks, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Power Query, SQL, Python, R, Tableau, or Power BI).
- Demonstrated ability to design and execute audit programs, evaluate risks, and formulate practical recommendations.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and critical-thinking skills with proven ability to participate in multiple audits simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience presenting audit results.
- Professional certification: CIA, CPA, CISA, or other credential approved by the Chief Audit Executive (required or in progress).

Desired Qualifications
- Experience auditing in federal contractor, national laboratory, government, or grant-funded environments.
- Strong working knowledge of federal regulations including Department of Energy requirements, Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and OMB Uniform Guidance.
- Advanced knowledge of COSO Internal Control Framework and GAO Green Book.

Full timeThe expected hiring range for this position is $75,750.00 - $118,170.00.Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only.
