This exciting role will see you driving place-based strategies, managing impactful urban renewal initiatives, and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. The City Planning and Places Division plays a critical role in shaping the future of Hume City. With four specialised departments, the division works to plan, shape, and protect Hume City to enhance liveability for current and future communities. The Strategic Projects and Places Department drives transformative initiatives that unlock significant community and economic benefits. Focusing on strategically identified sites, the department activates and develops key locations to create vibrant places that serve Hume’s diverse community. We bring strategic projects to life by focusing on building partnerships, attracting investment, and collaborating with key stakeholders to assess viability and deliver impactful outcomes.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Driving urban renewal and placemaking projects to create vibrant, sustainable spaces.
  • Lead the management of complex urban place projects, utilising cross-disciplinary project teams to achieve outcomes that align with the unique cultural, social, and environmental context of each site, while meeting strategic objectives and timelines.
  • Lead the Urban Places Team within the SPP Department by setting clear objectives, inspiring creativity and innovation, and fostering a collaborative culture that is deeply engaged in place-based planning and development to deliver exceptional results.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to secure investment and bring big ideas to life.
  • Writing clear, impactful reports and business cases to support strategic decision-making.
  • Managing projects from start to finish, ensuring quality outcomes on time and within budget.
  • Developing initiatives that transform precincts into thriving community hubs.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategies, programs, and initiatives focused on urban places, in collaboration with Council Departments, government agencies, and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage a prioritised program for the transformation of key activity centres into vibrant, sustainable urban places, identifying innovative approaches to challenges and opportunities.
  • Negotiate and secure agreements with potential partners (both private and public sector) on development projects and investment that enhance urban places for the people of Hume.
  • Oversee the provision of high-quality place making and urban design advice for Hume’s strategic projects.
  • Incorporate strategic place and precinct planning principles to guide the development and renewal of Community Centres, ensuring they reflect community needs, environmental sustainability, and design excellence.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Strong understanding of place-based frameworks, placemaking principles, and the role of place in urban development.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of urban planning and development principles, with a strong emphasis on integrating built form and the public realm to enhance place character and identity through place-based strategies.
  • Proven leadership skills, with the ability to inspire, manage, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging communities and building capacity within urban renewal environments, employing place-based strategies to foster inclusive, sustainable urban development.
