The Department of Corrections is accepting applications for anticipated vacancies for the Classification Officer position. These positions will work within the Maine Department of Corrections system and will also include a telework component.  These anticipated positions are open to current Maine DOC employees who wish to apply and all outside candidates.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is professional services work in administering a penal or correctional institution classification system.  Responsibilities include overseeing classification system operations; collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data; interpreting, advising on, and applying rules, regulations, and statutes; and controlling the security of all records.  In addition, position verifies, and documents all compacts and other legal applications and testifies in Courts of Law as the legal representative of the State.  This position will require statewide travel.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

• Reviews, analyzes, and summarizes resident records in order to recommend appropriate work assignment and other conditions of imprisonment.
• Oversees calculation and award of resident pre-detention and good time and establishment and maintenance of resident release date in order to attest to their accuracy and compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
• Oversees the preparation, maintenance, control, and security of resident case history records in order to ensure records are complete and accurate.
• Verifies, prepares, and distributes all legal resident documents including compacts on detainees in order to certify legal correctness.
• Testifies in Courts of Law as the legal representative of the State in order to provide required testimony.
• Consults with law enforcement agencies, attorney and judicial representatives, agency personnel, and residents on legal documents, records, and other data in order to provide advice.
• Trains prison personnel on court procedures and classification policies in order to enhance job proficiency.
• Compiles, interprets, analyzes, summarizes, and reports on census statistics and prison activities in order to provide information.
• Reviews and recommends proposed legislation and rule changes in order to determine impact on classification standards and system and maintain system effectiveness.
• Directs, assigns, and evaluates classification work of subordinate employees in order to ensure established standards are met and work is accomplished in a timely and efficient manner.
• Knowledge of the principles, practices, requirements, and services of penal or correctional institution classification.
• Knowledge of basic supervisory principles, practices, and techniques.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
• Ability to compile, analyze, and secure resident records.
• Ability to interpret the legal aspects of the Maine criminal code, and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to write clearly and effectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

 A Bachelors’ Degree in Criminal Justice or related field and two (2) years’ experience in interpreting the criminal code or similar statutes, -OR- an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
