Summary


The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Deputy Chief Medical Examiner for our Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services.

General Description

Performs professional and administrative work assisting in managing the operations of the County's Medical Examiner Division.

Formulates long-range goals for the organization, develops policy and position papers and negotiates with the chief administrative officer and/or elected officials.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements 

Requires graduation from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), jointly administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association (MD), or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association accredits osteopathic (DO) schools.

Requires five (5) years as an Associate Medical Examiner with demonstrated high proficiency and knowledge in the medical practice of pathology and forensic pathology. Within the (5) years as an Associate Medical Examiner, candidate requires at least two (2) years' experience in a supervisory or leadership role in forensic pathology.

Requires a board certified in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical and Forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Special Certifications and Licenses

Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.

Licensed as a medical doctor by the State of Florida. Must be board certified in anatomic and forensic pathology or anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

 

Examples of duties

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Assists in developing, evaluating and revising the operational policies and procedures of the Pathology section.

Assists in administering the County's forensic medical programs.

Directs through subordinates the planning, scheduling and coordination of divisional activities.

Represents the Medical Examiner's Office at meetings and conferences.

Develops and maintains professional working relationships with hospital authorities and the medical community.

Administers the Forensic Pathology fellow/fellowship program and maintaining accreditation through ACGME. 

Performs autopsies, examinations and death scene investigations.

Reviews cases through analysis of autopsies, laboratory findings and case investigation reports.

Plans and supervises the work of the Pathology staff, residents and visiting Pathologists.

Furnishes law enforcement officials with medical and scientific evidence.

Testifies in deposition and trial activities as an expert witness.

Explains causes of death to relatives of the deceased.

Researches, prepares and presents scientific papers.

Performs related work as assigned.
