Purpose

We are looking for an undergraduate student to assist in the development of building a hybrid UAV/mobile ground robot, requiring integrated mechanical design across both driving and flight modes.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and assemble structural frames using steel tubing and/or aluminum extrusions, including cutting, drilling, and fitting components to CAD specifications.

  • Design, model, and iterate CAD assemblies for the chassis, suspension, steering, etc.

  • 3D print prototype parts and fixtures for mechanical subsystems, and iterate designs based on fit and function testing.

  • Support integration of mechanical systems with electrical, sensor, and control subsystems, coordinating with team members on interface requirements.

  • Assist with bench and field testing of the ground and aerial systems.

  • Lead machine shop fabrication tasks (cutting, welding, drilling, tapping).

Required Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in 3 hours if not enrolled in 12 hours in the previous semester.

  • Mechanical Engineering or related background. 

  • CAD modeling.

  • 3D printing.

  • Skillful in designing and building fixed frames made out of steel tubes or aluminium extrusions. 

  • Must be willing to join in-person at Pickle Research Campus.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with automotives, suspension, braking, steering. 

  • FEA analysis

  • Hands-on experience and training with a machine shop.

  • Hands-on experience in welding or basic understanding of welding. 

Salary Range

$25.00 hourly

Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment

  • Use of manual dexterity

  • Development work on the robot itself to be done in Pickle Research Campus where mechanics tool set and protection gear are available. 

  • Most fabrication work to be done in ME workshops, Texas Inventionworks in main campus.
