The Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a full time Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2 position. The incumbent performs a variety of routine duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in clinical and research laboratories. An employee in this position provides broad support for the laboratory operations.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

  • Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing.

  • Transports specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately.

  • Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner.

  • Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.

  • Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol.

  • Participates in the performance improvement processes for the department.

  • Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.

  • Generates patient reports and forwarding them to the proper departments/physicians.

  • Investigates and responds to all inquiries or problems related to referral testing

  • Answers all inquiries made by the Reference Lab and resolves problem associated with improper or inadequate samples.

  • Answers all inquiries made by physicians or patient unit personnel related to specimen requirements.

  • Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotates previous stock when it applies

  • Checks packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee.

  • Serves as a lead/Back-up when Supervisor is unavailable.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                        

  • High School diploma or equivalent required

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

Coordinate and schedule specimen pick-up from the Hospital. Accession all cases and include clinical information from the requisitions. Log in specimens in the “notebook” and/or database system. Obtain transplant related clinical information from different laboratory information systems (i.e., transplant date, PRA information) and enter this information into each case at the time of accessioning. Organize cases for pathologists. Communicate with pathologists when cases are ready for sign out. Enter special stains and additional studies ordered by pathologists. Email signed out initial reports and addendums to ordering physician and/or corresponding clinical teams. Maintain the TAT log spreadsheet. Management of cases in JMH’s Copath, which includes ensuring that the S# is assigned, transferring interpretations from UM Copath, putting in special/IHC stains orders for all cases. Communicate with ordering physician regarding approval of additional testing requested by pathologist. Prepare cases for multidisciplinary conferences.
