Undergrad Intern - Operations - Manufacturing - Thousand Oaks (Summer 2026)

What You Will Do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen Thousand Oaks Drug Product Facility (B20) is undergoing a paradigm shift in terms of the scale of manufacturing operations and the product mix it supports. The plant and its supporting functions are growing in terms of staff and are embracing a 24-hour shift structure. The future state of B20 warrants more robust and integrated business processes to comprehensively track plant performance. The plant performance metrics are primarily generated at the floor level and eventually cascade all the way to senior leadership. The goal of this project is to ensure that the right metrics and data are being sourced from the floor and eventually integrated into downstream dashboards with a minimal amount of manual intervention.

Project Scope:

This project is manufacturing-adjacent and is effectively part of the business performance initiatives within the manufacturing-support group of B20 Manufacturing organization. The candidate leading this project will have a broad scope that encompasses the whole digital thread of information, i.e. Floor WCT, Plant WCT, Plant Review, Business Review etc. As B20 establishes itself as a medium-volume plant and its scale of operations keeps growing, it is of paramount business importance to ensure accurate and real-time information about plant performance is accessible at all levels of leadership. Revamping the reporting dashboards / other mechanisms currently used will require a thorough needs-finding process with the relevant stakeholders and subsequent technical implementation of the derived requirements. Therefore, the candidate needs to be comfortable with chartering the path forward for their project and accommodating shifting targets and timelines. Being open to establishing a broad network around B20 and its supporting functions and willingness to explore new technical solutions to how information travels through B20 will ensure a successful summer internship for the candidate.

Through working on developing effective digital reporting structures and maintaining an accurate resource allocation tool, the candidate will be able to understand the mechanics of operations in B20 and its supporting functions. They will be able to build relationships across B20’s supporting functions (QA, SC, PD, F&E etc.) and the broader Manufacturing Clinical Supply (MCS) organization. Spending time on the manufacturing floor to better understand the manufacturing process and benchmarking project planning with other sites will also be within the scope of the role.

Project Objectives:

  • Develop new and improve existing digital reporting mechanism for B20 plant performance
  • Produce time efficiencies / reduce waste by developing better ways of communicating or processing information across teams and workstreams
  • Network extensively with all relevant stakeholders to understand how MCS is structured and to feed insights back to B20 about the efficiency of the existing business processes

Skills that will be fostered/acquired during the rotation:

  • Business Performance
  • Project Management
  • Change Management
  • Influencing without Authority
  • Clinical and Commercial Manufacturing
