Who We Are

Research and Innovation (RI), led by the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI), enables, and advances the University’s research priorities as well as research activities of Cornell colleges, schools, and research centers, institutes, and laboratories.

The Cornell Center for the Social Sciences (CCSS) accelerates, enhances, and amplifies social science research at Cornell. The CCSS accomplishes these goals by providing Cornell social scientists with advanced computing and data infrastructure, quantitative and qualitative research training and consulting, and internal and external grant support and fellowships. In all our work, CCSS leadership ensures a positive culture that is deeply committed to inclusion, diversity, and investment in core and student staff by providing training and opportunities for professional development and growth and fostering a sense of connectedness on the campus. For more information about the CCSS, please visit:  https://socialsciences.cornell.edu/

What You Will Do

The Program Coordinator initiates, oversees, and evaluates CCSS grant and fellowship programs for social science faculty and works closely with faculty to define emerging needs for new or existing programs. This position is primarily on-site within Rhodes Hall, with regular meetings in Clark Hall. This role is performed largely independently under very general supervision and resolves moderately complex concerns and problems as needed.

Program Management: This position manages the strategic direction and operations of the biannual CCSS Seed Grants program, including assessing program goals, overseeing the application and review process, and documentation and evaluation of the program’s success. This role leads the annual Faculty Fellows Program from the search process to the residency, which includes weekly professional development activities. Other programs include the Accelerated Research Grants program and the Hire a Grant Writer program. The program coordinator also liaisons with CCSS-supported programs primarily run by other units, including the Qualitative and Interpretive Research Institute (QuIRI) and the NIH Grant Development Program (GDP). This role represents the CCSS at program events.

Program Evaluation and Promotion: The program coordinator reviews and evaluates program data and outcomes to assess program effectiveness and to inform adjustments. The program coordinator prepares reports on program accomplishments and disseminates results via the web, newsletters, and other outlets.

Special Projects: This position works closely with CCSS leadership, team members, and campus partners to coordinate development and implementation of programming, special projects, events, and emerging initiatives as needed. Although this position serves as the lead for the Grants and Fellowships program area, there are also Center-wide projects this position will help to organize, lead, and contribute to.

This role interacts regularly with faculty and staff in other units as a part of cultivating and maintaining collaborative relationships with departments and centers across campus. This role requires nuanced communication skills for working with vice provosts, college deans, department chairs, guest speakers, faculty, and staff. This role includes limited interactions with graduate and undergraduate students. There is significant writing beyond email communication, including drafting program descriptions, award letters, website text, and promotional materials. This position also liaises with Cornell units (facility management, IT, AV, and finance etc.) and external vendors to facilitate management of the CCSS facility in Rhodes Hall.

In all our work, CCSS leadership ensures a positive culture that is deeply committed to inclusion, diversity, and investment in core and student staff by providing training and opportunities for professional development and growth, fostering a sense of connectedness on the campus.
