PMCAbout the role
Rolling Stone, the pop culture bible for more than 50 years, is looking for a new Director of Photography to oversee its original imagery across all platforms.

You will propose the photographers who’ll capture those seminal images, and make sure the whole thing goes off with a minimum of drama.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and monitor all original photography across Rolling Stone’s many platforms — from cover shoots to online galleries to Instagram posts
- Along with the creative director, maintain the aesthetic goals for Rolling Stone photography, and make sure all of our shoots adhere to those visual aims
- Collaborate closely with our art, video, social, and Twitch to assemble a truly cohesive approach to visual storytelling
- Manage the team that supplies all imagery for news stories
- Work with the creative director and the photographers, in association with the top editors, to craft and execute concepts for Rolling Stone’s highest-profile photo shoots
- Brainstorm ideas for big stories, photo essays, and major features with Rolling Stone’s creative and editorial leadership
- Help build out a rigorously selected stable of photographers at all levels to maintain the quality of visual imagery in the magazine.
- Provide direction to those photographers in the lead-up to shoots and while on-set
- Work closely with talent and their representatives throughout the process
Requirements:
- Minimum of 7+ years of editorial photography commissioning
- A sharp eye, a felt sense of what’s next in pop culture, and an understanding at an instinctual level of what makes an image work for Rolling Stone
- Proven expertise in executing high-profile shoots with top talent
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, lead teams, and meet deadlines
- Deep understanding of pressing topics for diverse cultures and communities
- Knowledge of photo research, syndication, and contract negotiation with photographers and their agents
- A strong network of industry connections including photographers, agents, stylists, hair & makeup artists, locations, and prop houses

- A commitment to being a team player, and collaborating with colleagues across departments.
