About the Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students and beginning professionals with practical experience in a specific area of museum work at The Museum of Modern Art. Interns participate in weekly professional development activities designed to increase understanding of the Museum’s various collections, exhibitions, and departments. The Museum hosts approximately 25 interns in various departments across our institution. Participants may arrange for academic credit through their school, but it is not a requirement.

MoMA Summer 2025 internships require a commitment of four days per week. The schedule is Monday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. One must have a minimum of two years of college completed (or equivalent) by June 2025 in order to apply.

All summer intern applications are due by Friday, March 7th by 11:59 PM EST.

Department Projects & Tasks

The intern will work closely with staff in the Department of Publications as they conceptualize, plan, design, edit, print, and market exhibition catalogues and other books for MoMA’s upcoming seasons, in collaboration with curators and other colleagues throughout the museum. The intern may assist with exhibition labels and wall texts, as well as layout design for book projects, editing and proofreading, image research, color proofing and correction of reproductions, rights clearance, and marketing and sales materials.

In addition to these focused projects, the intern will participate in key administrative tasks such as archiving, book distribution, award submissions, and conference and event planning, and will receive focused career guidance, training, and resources in the world of museum publishing. MoMA has been publishing books since its founding in 1929. These books include exhibition catalogues, children’s books, collection histories, and facsimiles. This internship will provide a holistic overview of what it means to work in book publishing within a museum setting, with the hopes of fostering interest to pursue a career in art book publishing. The intern will gain experience on projects at each stage of the publishing process, beginning with idea proposals and ending with marketing and book distribution.

Department Skillset Requirements

Candidates with significant interest in art book publishing and/or an area of focus within the industry—such as design, production, editing, or business and marketing. Proficiency with Microsoft Office; skill with Adobe Creative Cloud applications is a preferred but is not required. A strong grasp of English is essential, as the intern will provide editorial support on English-language materials.
