About the Corewell Health Academy of Pharmacy Technicians

The Pharmacy Technician Student shall gain experience in all aspects of their Pharmacy Technician career through a dedicated, structured Pharmacy Technician Training Program.  The goal of this Program is to prepare the student for successfully obtaining the Michigan Pharmacy Technician License and PTCB Certification and to make graduating students eligible for employment with Corewell Health Pharmacies.

The Corewell Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program Student Program consists of a 10-week combination of theory and practice and is aimed at having the candidate learn the role of Pharmacy Technician.  The structure of the program entails 20 hours per week Didactic/Simulation Training and 20 Hours per Week Hands-On Experiential Rotations for a total of 400 Hours of Pharmacy Technician Training.

The Corewell Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program supports student education by delivering instruction from accredited educational content, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians who specialize in each subject within clinical and operational areas.  This structure allows students to receive the most advanced, applicable information possible through the use of the following:

Didactic Material

Didactic materials will be delivered via computerized learning and lecture style format.

Simulations
Simulated rotations imitate the real-world processes and systems described during the didactic portion of the program.  Simulation allows students to develop skills and practice processes described in lectures, so when they are asked to perform these tasks during their externship experience, they will understand their role in the system and how to handle the task at hand.

Experiential Rotations
Experiential rotations are real world opportunities for students to work alongside health care professionals and interact with patients to apply their classroom and simulation training.  For each rotation the student will report to a site coordinator and review the instructions and expectations for the rotation.  Experiential hours will be recorded using the programs digital platform.

Scope of Work

Medication Order fulfillment (i.e., various packaging, dispensing machine, labeling, shipping, etc.). Works under direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist in prepackaging medication for dispensing.  Assists the Pharmacist in final checking of filled prescriptions, which may include staging the medication for Pharmacist final review and/or packaging of medication after Pharmacist final review.  Coordinating and staging items for delivery for an accurate and timely delivery to the customer.  Works with Technician Supervisor in maintaining a clean, safe work environment, checking equipment for calibration, safety, and cleanliness.  Maintains proper storage and security conditions for drugs.  Mix pharmaceutical preparations, according to written prescriptions. Assists with special projects as needed.  Complies with all laws, regulations, and standards of ethical conduct.  Performs all job duties with a friendly positive and team-oriented approach.  Maintains professional/technical competencies and proficiencies for job responsibilities.  Complies with all company policies, procedures, rules, and standards.

• Corewell Health West offers this Program in Grand Rapids, Michigan; usually at Butterworth Hospital.
• This is usually a 10 to 13-Week Program.
• We usually post a Pharmacy Technician Student Position approximately 3 times a year (Apr/May – Jul/Aug – Nov/Dec).

• Once you apply to this posting, we send you information via email so that you may RSVP to an Information Session.
• At this Information Session, you will receive information regarding the Program.
• You will also receive a very brief Math and English Test, to assess basic Math/English skills that are necessary to become a Pharmacy Technician.
• Those who pass the Test and who are still interested in the Program aftert the Information Session, are moved forward for consideration by the hiring leader.
• Top candidates, based on a combination of factors, such as work history, test scores, etc. are interviewed.
• After interviews are conducted, top candidates, based on interviews and other factors, are extended an offer, until cohort seats all filled.
• If not selected to start with a particular cohort, you may still remain in consideration for future cohorts.
