Job Duties

Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential, liberal arts transfer institution that focuses on preparing students for transfer to highly ranked colleges and universities. The College is a hidden gem located outside the Tri-Cities region—and its rural setting featuring 750+ acres of wetlands, bucolic forest, and the state’s oldest and largest pecan grove.

The Department of Languages & Humanities at Richard Bland College of William & Mary seeks to hire an Assistant Professor of English. This is a 9-month, full-time, rolling contract position. This means that the position holder will begin on one-year, renewable contracts that, if successfully completed, will roll into three-year and eventually five-year renewable contracts.

Duties include, but are not limited:

● Teaching a 5/5 load of introductory writing courses per academic year, in the form of in-seat instruction and/or online instruction.
● As a faculty member, participating in division, college, and assigned committee meetings.
● Providing a learning environment that supports student success.
● Maintaining school-determined number of office hours per week for each class.
● Ensuring timely management and response to electronic correspondence from students, administrators, and other school officials.
● Maintaining and submitting accurate and timely reports for student grades/progress.
● Delivering grades in accordance with the academic calendar.
● Complete other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

● Master’s degree (M.A., M.S.) in Rhetoric & Composition, Reading & Literacy, English, or a closely related field.
● Teaching experience at the post-secondary level.

Additional Considerations

● Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D.) in English, Rhetoric & Composition, Reading & Literacy, or a closely related field.
● 3+ years of experience teaching at the post-secondary level.
● Evidence of excellence in the teaching of first-year composition.
● Experience training and supervising employees.
● Commitment to working with students who are first generation, who come from diverse backgrounds, and who come from rural and low-income areas.
