This advertisement is for a Career Service position located Central Office in the Office of General Counsel.
Salary: $42,259.88 - $44,607.42 Annual Range (Based on years of experience.)
SALARY WILL BE DETERMINED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT PAY POLICY.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This is a highly responsible legal administrative position which requires knowledge in the exercise of independent judgement in complex and technical areas.
- Reviews claims analysis requests sent by Risk Management to the Deputy General Counsel; investigates subject matter, and prepares replies as designated by the Deputy General Counsel.
- Reviews litigation discovery requests sent by contract counsel and Office of the Attorney General; gathers documentary information, distributes requests for written responses, and coordinates final replies for the Deputy General Counsel.
- Reviews complaints, petitions and other documents received from inmates, courts, attorneys, private citizens, outside agencies and employees. Maintains log of cases including nature of complaint and relief requested. Determines whether said documents are administrative, civil or criminal in nature; determines type of manner of service of process. Determines where documents should be sent representation, ie., Attorney General’s Office – criminal or civil section, Risk Management or in-house. When necessary, conducts research through court or judicial contact to properly categorize and route documents. Provides instruction and oversight to institutional Litigation Coordinators on service of process issues and processing of litigation documents. Prepares documents for transmittal by hand delivery on day of receipt. Maintains all potential litigation files not sent for representation.
- Reviews correspondence and mail of the Deputy General Counsel; distributes to other areas, as appropriate, organizes remaining mail for review by the Deputy General Counsel, investigates subject matter and prepare replies in correspondence matters delegated by the Deputy General Counsel.
- Researches and gathers documentation and other information in response to requests form the Department of Financial Services, Division of Risk Management, for the purpose of determining the disposition of claims or lawsuits. Drafts letters and memoranda directing institutional, regional or Central Office staff to provide the specified information and documents.
- Performs special assignments, research and related report or correspondence preparation as designated by the Deputy General Counsel.
- Maintains various computer logs and tracking systems that record correspondence, documents, reports and other records and information. Assists in the maintenance of legal bureau files.
- Responds to inquires and provides assistance to outside agencies, judges, court personnel, attorneys and private citizens regarding active and potential litigation.
- Assists in the maintenance of the general, case and research files of the Deputy General Counsel.
- Assists in maintaining the schedule of the Deputy General Counsel and tickler system for outstanding special assignments by the Deputy General Counsel.
- Responsible for handling the ethics and legislature for The Office of General Counsel.
