JOB SUMMARY:
The Office of the General Counsel (“OGC”) provides legal representation to the University and regularly engages with and advises the Board of Trustees, President, Provost, Dean and Vice President for Medical Affairs, faculty and academic departments, Business and Finance, Office of the Vice President for Research, Student Development, Human Resources, Division of Mission and Identity, Advancement, Marketing and Communications, Athletics, and the Department of Public Safety.
The Senior Associate General Counsel (Research and Business Transactions), under the direction of the Vice President and General Counsel, provides legal advice and periodic training in areas including but not limited to:
- Contract Negotiation and Review
- Research Initiatives (e.g., Clinical Trials, Institutional Review Board, Conflict of Interest in Research, Research Misconduct, Regulatory Compliance, Taylor Geospatial Initiative)
- Health Law and Academic Affairs (School of Medicine, Doisy College of Health Sciences, and School of Nursing)
- Copyright, Trademark, Intellectual Property, and Research Innovation
- Policy Review and Process Development
- Other duties as assigned
The Senior Associate General Counsel will be responsible for working with and providing day-to-day oversight of legal work performed by the legal fellow and paralegal within the Office of the General Counsel. The Senior Associate General Counsel may also serve on various University committees.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of higher education law preferred
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Analytical and time management skills
- Strong ability to organize/prioritize duties
- Ability to conduct thorough internal investigations
- Ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels and from varied backgrounds
- Service-oriented with the ability to function effectively with non-attorney personnel
- Ability to think creatively, exercise independent judgment and make quick, informed judgments
- Ability to work well independently as well as on a team
MINMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
Eight (8) years of relevant legal experience
Licensed to practice in the state of Missouri, or the ability to obtain a Missouri license with one year of employment
