About the role

The Financial Counselor Rep will be responsible for counseling uninsured and or under-insured patients to attempt to obtain a paying funding source. The Financial Counselor Rep will educate patients on their responsibilities and potential options. The Financial Counselor is responsible for accurately and compassionately explaining to the patient their financial obligations during the financial counseling session.

  • To thrive in this position, you will act with a strong sense of patient care and attention to detail. You will explain financial responsibilities for services received, payment options, and collection steps to patients or the person/people responsible for payment.
  • You should feel comfortable communicating insurance benefits and recommending alternative payment sources when needed. You should also feel comfortable contacting insurance carriers or other sources and always act as an advocate for the patient.   
  • We train! Although healthcare experience is not necessary to thrive in this position, it is helpful to have some financial background and knowledge of State and/or Federal assistance. Call center experience is a plus as the work environment can get very busy.
  • Strong customer service skills are a must!  
  • Since this work is done in a hospital setting, you should be able to interact and communicate with empathy and professionalism with those who may be ill. You must also be up to date on all vaccinations (including but not limited to COVID-19 and annual flu shot), pass a drug test, and pass a background check prior to hire.   
     

Responsibilities: 

  • Complete a financial screening for uninsured patients and identify financial assistance programs for patients unable to meet their financial obligations.
  • Explain financial responsibilities for services received, payment options, and point of service collections on procedures to patients or parties responsible for payment.
  • Provide assistance to uninsured patients and families in completing and filing Medicaid or assistance program applications with the appropriate agency.
  • Provide patients and their families support with gathering necessary documents for Medicaid or assistance programs.
  • Assist in executing National Financial Counseling team initiatives to promote best in class uninsured patient screenings and conversion activities.
  • Serve as liaison between Case Management, Clinical Staff, Medicaid Vendor, and Family Independence Agency to assist patients and families in completing assistance program applications and determine eligibility and coverage.
     

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and navigate between multiple systems simultaneously
  • Ability to quickly develop trust and rapport with patients
  • Ability to communicate with compassion and authenticity relating to sensitive topics

Desired Qualification:  

  • Previous experience as a financial counselor with background in medical terminology preferred
  • Hospital or relevant healthcare experience a plus
  • Understanding of State and Federal assistance programs

For this US-based position, the base pay range is $14.42 - $20.24 per hour . Individual pay is determined by role, level, location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
