 Job Summary
The overall purpose of this position is to provide strategic and operational leadership to external facing aspects of IEEE's global business and operations. The incumbent is primarily responsible for linking IEEE intellectual property to potential markets that desire greater knowledge of our products and services. He/She determines policies and practices for sales and marketing efforts, and regularly interacts with current and potential customers, worldwide, and manages the demand generation process. A major focus of this position is to grow revenue and to continually create opportunities for revenue growth in both local and global markets. For example, it is expected that the IEEE CMO will coordinate the increased use of IEEE products and services with industry. He/She manages operating unit revenue of 245 million, [45%] of total IEEE revenue and an operating expense budget of 30 million.

The role typically reports to the IEEE Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer and is a member of the Management Council, IEEE's executive leadership team. He/She oversees an operating unit of 103 regular employees, which includes 6 direct reports. This position has full autonomy on overall business strategy, day to day operations and business deliverables but consults the IEEE Executive Director & COO for major strategic decisions that affect the whole organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develops, directs, and executes strategic objectives for the operating unit in accordance with IEEE business goals and needs; Secures buy in to overarching strategies and their implementation from IEEE Board of Directors and executive management
  • Influences the creation of new intellectual products the roadmap for the evolution existing products, and the creation of IEEE product and membership promotional campaigns; Partners with IEEE product managers in the creation and packaging of new intellectual property products, and the product management of existing products
  • Influences the licensing and discoverability of IEEE online content on non-IEEE websites. He/she also serves as an agent for non-IEEE content, worldwide
  • Ensures a strong customer service orientation exists within MSD, and ensures the creation and maintenance of an environment that is attentive to users’ needs; Ensures that customer-focused individuals are recruited, developed and continually motivated toward service excellence; Ensures that all customers and potential customers are served effectively and within established sales and marketing metrics and benchmarks.
  • Increases revenue generation and manages demand generation process
  • Staff Development and Management. The CMO supervises approximately 103 departmental staff and oversees their career development.
  • Generates market research, gathers competitive intelligence, and provides appropriate analyses, including but not limited to separation of forecasts due to income growth by price increases from forecasts projecting income change due to an increase or decrease in customers.
  • Directs pricing and placement strategy and oversee the creation of the annual research needed for the competitive pricing of products; Reviews pricing recommendations and makes pricing recommendations to the Board of Directors which impacts the accuracy of his or her budgets and budget forecasts which must clearly differentiate forecasted revenue due to price increases versus revenue forecasted due to an increase or decrease in customers
  • Ensures the quality of products sold and services provided using established metrics and benchmarks for quality measurements
  • Directs a leadership team who manages IEEE’s marketing, sales, product design, platform design, digital marketing and communications teams He is an integral part of the professional team that ensures policies are in place to reduce intellectual property losses via misuse and wrongful downloading
  • Serves as profit and loss fiduciary steward for an operating unit in line with IEEE’s financial goals and objectives
