About This Role: 

Hippo is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Internal Underwriting Audit & Quality assurance Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will develop the program review standards for operational, underwriting, financial and compliance areas. In partnership with key internal stakeholders, this position will evaluate business processes and controls to identify gaps and risks. The role is responsible for establishing and implementing independent audits of underwriting files, identifying areas for improvement, and collaborating with underwriters to ensure adherence to Company Policies and Procedures.

What You'll Do: 

  • Conduct comprehensive audits of a sample of homeowners insurance underwriting files, focusing on accuracy, completeness, and adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Building an audit function from the ground up
  • Identify trends and opportunities for improvement in underwriting processes
  • Develop and recommend corrective action plans to address identified issues
  • Document and report audit findings, including detailed reports with recommendations for improvement
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new and improved underwriting procedures
  • Collaborate with claims adjusters, underwriting, and other departments to ensure consistent and accurate underwriting
  • Maintain a strong understanding of homeowners insurance policies, industry regulations, and best practices 
  • Stay current on relevant software and technology used in the underwriting function 
  • Create and execute audit plans. Provide regular well-structured and actionable reports with audit findings 
  • Manage the Large Loss review process to maintain the feedback loop to underwriting from the largest claims 
  • Analyze causes of and respond to customer complaints. Provide regular reports on the insights and engage relevant stakeholders across the organization to improve the customer experience 

Must Haves:

  • 5 - 7 years of experience in leading program audits within the P&C Insurance industry 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Insurance, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or related field
  • Expertise in audits for MGA’s, Direct Insurers, and Reinsurers 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and diagnose root causes of errors and areas for improvement
  • Understanding of homeowners insurance policies and regulations
  • Experience building relationships and collaborating with managers, risk analysts, and other stakeholders to address quality assurance issues and implement decisions
  • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, practices, and regulatory requirements 
  • Experience responding to DOI and BBB complaints
  • Comfortable leading regular internal audits and risk assessments to identify and address risk across multiple disciplines 
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Effective communicator with all levels of an organization  
  • A background in Underwriting and/or Claims is preferred 
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn how to help others solve problems 
  • Flexible and willing to do what is needed to get great work done 
  • A natural inclination to work within a culture that is fast-paced and dynamic

  • Design Thinking, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodology experience (a plus)
