Summary
Under the supervision of the Manager of Engineering, it is the job of a Rails Engineer to design and implement features for our applications and also help maintain them by fixing bugs and suggesting/improving places where the code can be made better with refactoring. Engineers at Intellum take on ownership of major components of the system and drive the engineering team’s practices.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and test new features for our LMS and suite of applications while considering the implications of security, scalability and reliability
- Write well-crafted, high-quality, self-documented, and easy to maintain code
- Fix defects and improve application performance
- Work collaboratively with teammates
- Perform code reviews for teammates
- Work closely with our designers to document requirements and iterate on feature development
- Work closely with our Customer Care team to help support our customers
- Periodically take on tier 2 on-call support duties to handle client support requests
- Engineers are additionally expected to: 1) Drive the architectural direction of the software. 2) Take on ownership of major components or engineering processes. 3) Mentor less-experienced engineers and ensure code quality.
Required Skills & Experience
- At least 3 to 5 years of experience developing software professionally.
- 2 - 4 years experience writing production Rails applications.
- Ruby 2.x.
- Rails 4.x.
- PostgreSQL or similar relational database.
- Background/async processing solutions (such as Sidekiq).
- Experience with Rails application server (such as Passenger).
- Experience with cloud computing platform (such as AWS, GCS).
- Solid experience working on production Rails applications and good all around back end and front end (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
- Good understanding of relational databases and SQL.
- Exposure to NoSQL technologies such as Redis and ElasticSearch.
- Experience with version control tools such as Git.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:��
- Occasional irregular work hours.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, etc.
- Extended time viewing a computer monitor.
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
