The Cytometry and Antibody Technology (CAT) Facility serves the faculty by providing access to state-of-the-art technology in quantitative analytical approaches to measure molecular and cellular function. The facility is designed to meet the widespread needs for specialized cytometric analysis and continues to respond to the demand for new and improved technology.


Job Summary
 

The job participates in scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

The University of Chicago Flow Cytometry Core Facility offers state of the art instrumentation and expertise in the measurements of cells and their products to the community of UoC scientists on campus as well as neighboring universities and biotechnology companies. The position will require the candidate to provide excellent customer service by maintaining cell sorters and analysis software, assisting the users in developing fluorescence assays and participate in the maintenance of the facility’s instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain cell sorter for the UoC community of researchers. 

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues on the instruments hosted in the facility.

  • Assist the facility’s users in the operation of the facility’s instruments and advise on the most appropriate techniques and protocols.

  • Train users on the operation on benchtop analyzers and cell sorters.

  • Support and train CAT Facility staff in the proper use of the facility’s equipment.

  • Assist the Associate Scientific Director with ongoing scientific projects.

  • Operate and maintain benchtop flow cytometers.

  • Perform the maintenance and quality control protocols on benchtop flow cytometers.

  • Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan.

  • Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.

  • Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, physics or related field.

Experience:

  • Proficiency in Flow Cytometry and cell sorting is an absolute requirement.

  • Mastery of acquisition platforms BD FACSDIVA, Amnis Inspire, Cytek SpectroFlo, FlowJo and FCS Express is essential.

  • Previous laboratory experience required.

  • Candidate must possess good organizational and communication skills, initiative and independence and have the ability to interact with all faculty members, students and staff who utilize the facility.

  • Possessing an aptitude for working with computers, electronics and software.

  • Clear and proficient communication with facility users.

  • Respects confidentiality.

  • Scientific and technological problem solving skills.

  • Reading and writing documents including protocol and SOPs.

  • Independently learning new software and instrumentation.

  • Daily operation of computers.

  • Possess basic math skills.

  • Efficient at multi-tasking.
