Lead Control Systems Engineer (Ignition Design) - Remote
Thermo SystemsAbout the role
Who We Are:
Thermo Systems is a global, full-service control-systems integrator delivering world-class automation to District Energy, Life Sciences, and—most relevant to this role—Mission-Critical data-center markets. Our teams design and deploy the SCADA and BMS platforms that keep hyperscale facilities online 24×7. “The Thermo Way” unites us: we foster connection and camaraderie, adapt quickly, and execute with integrity so every employee, every customer, and the company itself succeeds.
Job Summary:
Join our Control System Design Team as an Ignition Design Engineer. You’ll contribute to the design, configuration, and delivery of SCADA/BMS solutions built on Inductive Automation Ignition—collaborating remotely with CSEs, network engineers, and commissioning teams. Expect up to 20% travel for SFAT (site/factory acceptance testing), site walks, and commissioning support.
What you’ll do:
-
Design & build
- Develop Ignition architectures: Gateway configuration, redundancy, security/roles, store-and-forward, and edge connectivity.
- Model clean tag/UDT structures (naming, inheritance, parameterization) and implement historian, alarming, and notification pipelines.
- Build HMIs/dashboards (Ignition Perspective/Vision), reusable templates, and navigation consistent with Thermo standards.
- Integrate PLCs/OT devices via OPC UA, Modbus/TCP, BACnet/IP, and vendor drivers; coordinate point lists with PLC and MEP teams.
- Author sequences of operation in software (scripts/expressions) and implement interlocks, modes, and permissives as designed.
-
Engineering deliverables & quality
- Produce/maintain I/O lists, network topologies, P&IDs markups, and control narratives; keep everything aligned to Thermo QMS.
- Write test plans and procedures; execute FAT/SFAT scripts; capture defects and close them with solid root-cause notes.
- Perform peer reviews and redlines for technical accuracy, formatting, and compliance with standards/templates.
- Generate turnover packages: gateway backups, tag exports, as-builts, O&M content, and training materials.
-
Project execution & collaboration
- Break down tasks, estimate effort, and hit schedule/budget targets on assigned workstreams.
- Communicate proactively with PMs, site leads, vendors, and customers; surface risks early and offer options.
- Support onsite teams during start-up/commissioning (point-to-point, I/O checkouts, issue triage).
Education and Experience:
- B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Controls Engineering—or equivalent technical discipline.
- 1–4 years total experience, including hands-on work with industrial/OT controls or SCADA
