About the role
Our preference is for this role to be HYBRID, working in‑office Tuesday–Thursday at one of our Wisconsin locations:
- Merrill, WI (Preferred)
- Milwaukee, WI
- Madison, WI
While we will consider fully remote candidates, our preference is for someone based in the Midwest who can travel to our Merrill office on an as‑needed basis if not within daily commuting distance to one of our locations.
What you'll be doing:
Manage and provide underwriting direction and leadership to determine risk acceptability on complex and technically involved work. Assist personnel, at all levels, to analyze and evaluate risks, recognizing exposures to make sound underwriting decisions on risk acceptability, coverage, and pricing. Supervisor responsibilities to include staffing, training and development, performance management, and workforce planning. Build a strong working relationship with all sales staff, direct agents, and others within and outside the company to attain corporate goals. Make recommendations for underwriting guidelines, direction, and effectiveness of the underwriting function. Analyze books of business to identify opportunities for growth and profitability improvement. Coach assigned personnel in setting and attaining professional development goals. Assist in the development of underwriting goals and objectives and the supporting budget. Keep corporate management informed on relevant operational, territory, and personnel issues. On any given day, you'll:
- Within established binding authority and in compliance with filings, provide leadership to effectively write and retain profitable business aligned with division and company objectives.
- Assist underwriting personnel at all levels to analyze and evaluate risk, recognizing exposures to make sound underwriting decisions on risk acceptability, coverage alternatives, risk management recommendations, and pricing.
- Manage binding authorities for all roles with delegated binding authority of CM Group.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to attain department and corporate goals. Be the underwriting knowledge driver and expert of underwriting guidelines, philosophies, and general directives for all within the assigned team.
- Oversee the appropriate reinsurance placement on individual accounts. Negotiate with reinsurers on unique placement and special acceptance situations.
- Make product recommendations and identify and assist in resolving underwriting issues. Provide input into company underwriting guidelines, philosophies, and directives.
- Recognize and be receptive to change opportunities that will enhance the effectiveness of Underwriting.
- Recruit, hire, train, appraise, and conduct salary administration for direct reporting staff members. Coach assigned personnel in setting professional development goals and attaining these goals.
- Conduct underwriting audits for quality and development of underwriting skills. Be a resource/expert to assist in training of recognized underwriting needs.
- Be a resource to the Underwriting Department through enhancing the knowledge of others, acting as a subject matter expert for the department and others in CM Group, assisting underwriting personnel with accounts above their binding authority or beyond their knowledge level, and assisting the department in special projects.
- Be a leader within the Underwriting Department through acting as a role model, being engaged in change, being energetic in recognizing and resolving issues, assisting others to work in a team environment, assuming responsibility for decisions and actions, and developing trust within the department.
- Participate/lead assigned projects. Develop and make presentations as necessary.
- Maintain and continue to develop technical knowledge and expertise on Church Mutual and industry coverage forms. Stay apprised of evolving exposures and other developments in the markets served by the company. Continue to develop leadership skills through internal and external publications, seminars, and conferences. Share knowledge gained with peers.
- Provide operational input to the Actuarial Department in support of the rate‑making process.
- Assist in developing underwriting goals and objectives and the supporting budget for the Underwriting Department.
- Travel, as necessary, to visit agents, sales representatives, and insureds to assist in new or renewal presentations or foster business relationships.
- Bachelor's degree is required. Successful completion of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) designation may be considered in lieu of a degree.
