Job Description

Director of Communications

About the Position: The Director of Communications oversees all communication efforts aimed at informing the public about the programs, services, and achievements statewide of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Establish and maintain contact with local organizations
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the agency at times when a member of the leadership team is unavailable
  • Develop public awareness campaigns
  • Create comprehensive communication plans
  • Draft various media-related documents
  • Ensure adherence to brand guidelines as set forth by State Government
  • Organize public events and press conferences
  • Create key communication messaging for crisis situations
  • Oversee the communications team which includes editing social media posts and campaigns, graphic design creations and artwork, website content, and all other communications needs.

Job Type/Salary:

  • Application period: 05/16/25-06/06/25

  • Compensation: $125,000.00
  • Primary Working Hours are M-F; 8-5
  • FLSA Status: Exempt

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or a related field
  • Minimum of seven years of professional level experience in writing, editing, radio and/or television, public relations, or serving as a public information manager, including four years in a supervisory or administrative capacity
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

NOTE: No substitution will be allowed for the required professional experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity.

Special Requirements:

  • Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill any job-related travel normally associated with this position
