ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Design Architect IV is responsible for presenting technical and design solutions directly to clients while collaborating closely with the project manager to ensure successful project outcomes. This role leads the design and technical delivery of the team, overseeing the execution of project plans. Additionally, they directly lead the creation of typology studies, site analysis, design sketches, and other materials to explore and communicate design concepts throughout all phases of project development. As a design leader, the Design Architect IV mentors design staff and contributes to the firm’s spirited design culture, playing a pivotal role in firmwide design initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Project Deliverables
Lead the architectural design process for large or complex projects.
Engage with clients to understand their vision and provide expert design recommendations.
Direct the preparation of design documentation, including designs, presentations, and 3D renderings, while guiding junior staff.
Utilize proficiency in design software (Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, BSD Spec Link, Adobe) to create both presentation and production materials.
Create and evaluate design concepts using sketching, models, and drawings, incorporating feedback from clients and teams.
Project Collaboration
Develop and manage work plans for large-scale projects, ensuring alignment with budget and schedule goals.
Leads and facilitates deliverable reviews and facilitate predesign services to ensure feasibility and project success.
Manages complex and routine projects, maintaining shared electronic documentation and ensuring clear communication across internal and external teams.
Provide updates on changes to design, scope, schedule, and budget to senior project leaders and stakeholders.
Leads product research and selection, contributing to design solutions and project goals.
Review and Compliance
Oversee QA/QC processes, ensuring that all project documentation meets quality standards and performance-based design (PBD) principles.
Collaborate with consultants to ensure designs comply with relevant codes, regulations, and sustainability goals.
Lead field observations to monitor construction progress and resolve unforeseen conditions or code issues.
Implement and uphold the development of best practices and quality control measures in collaboration with discipline leaders.
Review and approve construction documents to ensure they meet design intent and compliance standards.
Teamwork and Support
Mentor junior architects and design staff, fostering a collaborative and creative work environment developing performance plans to enhance the architectural skills of less experienced staff.
Lead professional development sessions, such as “Lessons Learned,” to promote team growth and prevent recurring quality issues.
Promote a culture of excellence, ensuring all team members embrace quality and design appreciation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Licensure and Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or equivalent in education and experience required for professional licensure. Master’s Degree in Architecture preferred.
Completion of Architectural Experience Program (AXP) and Architectural Registration Exams (ARE’s) resulting in Licensure.
Typical employees have 20 years of post-grad experience.
NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) registration preferred.
AIA membership preferred.
CSI-CDT certification preferred (and training provided).
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) AP BD+C certification preferred.
WELL AP certification preferred.
Technology Skills
Comfortable using technology, standard software tools and search engines.
Proficient in Revit or AutoCAD software.
