Classroom Teaching Assistant

Description

The Department of Nutrition is seeking graduate and junior- or senior-level undergraduate Nutrition students to serve as teaching assistants for some of our spring 2026 courses. Teaching assistant responsibilities will vary by class, but may include the following:

• Grading homework, quizzes, and/or exams
• In-class assistance with labs and activities
• Canvas site maintenance
• Holding office hours
• Assisting with proctoring exams
• Literature reviews to update course materials

Additionally, some TAs will have the opportunity to take on additional responsibility depending upon interest and availability.  This additional responsibility will be a 3-5 hour per week commitment and will involve working on accessibility remediation to ensure that course documents and Canvas sites comply with university accessibility policies.  Paid training will be provided.   TAs for Nutrition classes typically work 8-15 hours per week, and hours will likely vary from week to week.  Please note that student employees are not permitted to work during scheduled meeting times for classes in which they are enrolled and cannot exceed 20 hours per week between all campus jobs held.  For more information on Student Employment's policies, please review the Student Employment Handbook.   Hourly Rate The Nutrition Department currently offers the following hourly rates for classroom TAs:

• Graduate students: $15.60
• Undergraduate students: $13.20

Student employees are paid twice a month for hours worked, as explained in the Student Employment Handbook.

UNIV 300/400

TA training is required by the Office of the Provost for all undergraduate and graduate students who will be serving as UTAs or GTAs.  This training consists of a series of online modules that must be completed in Canvas at the beginning of the semester in which you start working as a TA.  Additional information can be found on the UCITE TA training website.  Students are not paid for their time during this training.

Accessibility Remediation Training

As mentioned above, some Nutrition Department TAs will have the opportunity to assist faculty with ensuring that course documents and Canvas sites comply with university accessibility policies.  This training includes online modules and a synchronous session hosted by Teaching and Learning Technologies.  Additional information will be provided when the schedule is finalized.  Students who participate will be paid for their time spent completing this training.

Qualifications

Eligible students must:

• Be enrolled at least half-time in one of the following programs: Nutrition MS, Public Health Nutrition MS, Nutrition BA/BS (juniors and seniors only), or Nutritional Biochemistry & Metabolism BA/BS (juniors and seniors only).
• Have completed the course for which they will serve as a TA, or an equivalent course at another institution, and earned an A.
• Be eligible for hourly campus employment through the Office of Student Employment.
• Complete university-required TA training.
