About the role

Human Factors Engineer

Company:

The Boeing Company

Are you ready to join a team of innovators, strategic disruptors, and dreamers who dare to redefine the future of the defense industry? Are you driven to create the unimaginable?  Are you passionate about addressing human performance within the design and development of cutting-edge aerospace systems?

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) has an exciting opportunity for a Human Engineer to join our Human Engineering team in El Segundo CA working on the front end of the next generation of Space Mission Systems technology.

As a Human Factors Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the design, development, and integration of complex aerospace systems, ensuring that all components function cohesively to meet user needs and operational requirements. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems engineers, software developers, and hardware specialists, to create systems that are not only technically robust but also intuitive and user-friendly, enhancing overall efficiency and user satisfaction.

Position Responsibilities :

  • Apply Human Engineering knowledge and principles to the analysis, design, and evaluation of complex systems

  • Define system performance requirements to ensure safe and successful human operation of physical, functional, and program interfaces for all system operators

  • Apply human performance principles, methodologies, and technologies to the design of complex systems

  • Apply a knowledge of military standards (such as MIL-STD-1472, MIL-STD-1474, MIL-STD-1787, MIL-STD-3009, MIL-STD-411F) to meet program requirements

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define human factors requirements that ensure optimal user interaction with systems. This involves analyzing user needs, operational contexts, and task demands to establish clear, measurable criteria for usability, accessibility, and user satisfaction.

  • Work closely with systems engineers to integrate human factors requirements into overall system specifications, ensuring that user interface designs, workflows, and system functionalities align with human capabilities and limitations.

  • Establish and document the functionality and navigation structure of the graphical user interface (GUI), ensuring it supports intuitive user interactions. This includes outlining key features, user workflows, and navigation paths, as well as designing alerting mechanisms that effectively communicate critical information to users, thereby optimizing performance, situational awareness and decision-making.

  • Create low-fidelity prototypes, such as wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups of the GUI to visualize design concepts, facilitating discussions with stakeholders and gathering feedback for iterative improvements.

  • Develop and iterate rapid prototypes to effectively test design concepts and gather user feedback early in the development process, ensuring that user insights inform subsequent design iterations.

  • Plan and conduct usability testing sessions with end-users to evaluate the effectiveness of the operator interface, collecting qualitative and quantitative data to guide design decisions.

  • Facilitate effective communication among interdisciplinary teams, ensuring that human factors insights are integrated into system design and decision-making processes.

  • Identify potential risks associated with system design and operation, implementing mitigation strategies to enhance usability, performance, and safety.

  • Occasional business travel and after-hours support may be required.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
