The Program Specialist will provide coordination, consultation, and program development for special education students in the district's Special Education Program. The Special Education Program Specialist is directly responsible to the Director of Special Education.
Redwood City School District, through its partnership has engaged in a multi-year effort to evolve selected campuses into Community Schools. Community Schools are
educational institutions that combine the rigorous academics of a quality school with a
wide range of vital in-house services, supports, and opportunities to promote children’s
learning and development. Community Schools rely on partnerships, shared leadership
and integrated service delivery to meet its purpose of supporting the academic
development of students by focusing and addressing the barriers to learning.The Redwood City Community Schools operate under of the following overarching
goals:
1. Ensure that all students are prepared to be successful in high school and beyond.
2. Ensure safe, healthy and respectful environment for students, staff and community.
3. Ensure that all schools are places where children grow intellectually, socially,
physically, and emotionally.
4. Work with our community to engage, support and take collective responsibility for our children and our schools.
The Community School Coordinator is charged with continuously evolving and
implementing Community School strategies. With support from the district and school
administration, the Community School Coordinator leads, coordinates and oversees
programs and activities on the school campus that support students and their families’
emotional, social and health needs. The Community School Coordinator also
participates in city and county efforts to share and promote the value and benefits of
Community Schools. Initiatives and programs to be orchestrated include, but are not
limited to, family support, after school programs, health insurance enrollment, health
education and access to health services, mental health services, family engagement,
prevention and early intervention, adult education and academic supports.
The Community School Coordinator reports to the Director of School-Community
Partnerships and Principals.
JOB DUTIES
• Orchestrate supplemental student and family activities, including but not limited to
family support services, health, wellness education and access and mental health
services – child and family, extended day learning opportunities and other services.
• Oversee, manage and integrate and align all extended day learning opportunities
with the school goals and following grant guidelines and agreements with partners.
• Develop and sustain partnerships with city and county services and non-profit
agencies to provide supports and opportunities to students and families that meet
their dynamic needs as well as fulfill organizations’ missions.
• Establish protocols to manage and maintain quality partnerships, including, but not
limited to – development of MOUs, facilitation of regular meetings, planning
sessions, joint work plans and conflict resolution processes.
• Work collaboratively with school administrators to integrate and align non-academic
services with school priorities and increase accessibility of school campuses to
parents, community members and students. Identify and initiate problem-solving
measures among partners.
• Support the development of youth leadership, parent engagement and family
support throughout all Community School efforts; institutionalize decision-making
roles for parents and students within the Community School.
• Supervise, support and provide programmatic direction to partner organizations
personnel according to agreements and MOUs.
• Work collaboratively with school administrators, teachers, parents and youth to
identify needs and to develop programming that is community responsive.
• Serve on the school site council, ELAC, School Leadership and other meetings
• Design, develop and coordinate special projects.
• Assist with resource development (including grant proposal and report writing).
