About the role

Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Block. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Block and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

Square’s rapidly growing Square Banking has revolutionized the way businesses and consumers obtain the funding needed to achieve their goals. Unlike traditional business financing products, Square Banking extends offers to pre-qualified sellers with no application process, funds are deposited as soon as the next business day, and repayment happens as a fixed percentage of daily card sales. Since the product launched in 2014, Square Banking Credit has extended more than $9 billion to hundreds of thousands of sellers.

As a full-stack software engineer on the Credit Underwriting Team, you will help us grow and expand access to credit for our Square sellers. You will be responsible for designing, building and owning sophisticated underwriting services that leverage data and machine learning technologies to originate and approve a variety of lending products. Our customers are internal teams iterating on existing loan products as well as experimenting with brand new loan structures. Our backend is the powerhouse behind all of loan origination, and our frontend enables product teams to customize, test, and manage the credit policies behind these loans. You will work primarily on our backend systems with regular contributions to our frontend as well.

Qualifications

You will:

  • Work closely with product, data science, and other engineering teams to enable innovative new lending products. This includes building new fullstack self-serve platform features, working with new data sources and data pipeline technologies, and more.

  • Collaborate with other engineering teams on exciting new lending initiatives and products

  • Modernize our entire underwriting process to be cloud-first and scale to meet Square's growth needs for years into the future

  • Build systems that collect and maintain customers confidential data, while holding Square to the highest standards for security and compliance

You have:

  • 4+ years of full-stack software engineering experience

  • Interest in building modern, scalable architectures using AWS technologies, including DynamoDB, SQS, Lambdas, Step Functions, etc.

  • Interest in working on back-end systems using Go and Ruby on Rails. Systems include everything from APIs and business logic to optimizing databases, streams, and software engines.

  • Interest in working on frontend interfaces using Typescript and React

  • Interest in modeling complex domains and building resilient systems to support real world applications

  • Bonus: Prior experience working in lending, underwriting, or risk management.

Tools we use and teach:
