At STM Journals, we collaborate with researchers to facilitate the publication of their impactful scientific discoveries, with a focus on rigorous peer review, ethics, and reproducibility. In support of our portfolio of 2700+ hybrid and open access scientific journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes, and fostering equitable participation in publishing.
 

About the Role


As a Senior Production Editor, you lead the operational activities of running proprietary and/or society journals and also oversee a broader portfolio of journals. This includes scheduling of articles, online publication activities, copyediting, monitoring the quality and quantity of copyedited material, producing cover designs and advertising layouts, and ensuring adherence to style, standards, and schedules. SPEs supervise staff for a portfolio of journals (including Production Editor level) and together comprise a production management team that is responsible for delivering on production-wide strategy and goals.

Responsibilities

  • Copyediting and/or performing quality control on freelance-copyedited work

  • Tracking all papers from acceptance to publication; balance online early and print deadlines

  • Supporting journals in key technical journal-management procedures; independently handling all aspects of journal milestones and deadlines

  • Thinking critically about department-wide workflows and processes; putting forth forward-reaching ideas to improve operations in teams, Production, and Publishing Operations.

  • Acting as a leader within Production: meeting regularly with other SPEs and Editorial Operations Supervisors to discuss issues relevant to one’s team within the larger organizational structure, actively seeking out and sharing best practices with other team leaders, and bringing historical knowledge and expertise to bear in group discussions

 

Requirements

  • Be detail oriented, with attention to quality, thoroughness, and accuracy 

  • Possess expertise in and knowledge of Cell Press systems, workflows, and infrastructure 

  • Possess leadership skills within Pub Ops department and wider Cell Press 

  • Be organized with concern for order and follow-up 

  • Have working knowledge of Office and advanced expertise with standard production systems 

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, verbal & written 

  • Have effective interpersonal skills  

  • Have the ability to handle a multitude of tasks 

  • Be able to set priorities

  • Identify problems and solutions, analytical thinking
