Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety.  Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager plays a critical role in overseeing daily accounting operations for all KIND entities. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing and reconciling journal entries and balance sheet accounts, managing monthly close activities, and ensuring compliance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, and funder requirements.

The Accounting Manager partners closely with the Controller to maintain audit readiness, strengthen internal controls, and ensure the efficiency and integrity of accounting processes. This is a hands-on role suited to a proactive, detail-oriented accounting professional with strong nonprofit and federal award expertise.

The Accounting Manager is expected to lead with integrity, accountability, and a strong commitment to KIND’s mission and values. While this role may not have formal direct reports, it functions as a key leader within the Finance team and across the organization.

This is a remote position based from any location in the U.S.

Essential Functions

    Accounting Operations & Financial Close

    • Manages daily general ledger activities, including preparation, review, analysis, and reclassification of journal entries.
    • Performs monthly bank reconciliations for domestic and international accounts.
    • Prepares and maintains comprehensive monthly balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
    • Expenses prepaid transactions and maintains monthly prepaid schedules.
    • Supports monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

      Compliance, Grants & Revenue Recognition

      • Ensures compliance with GAAP, federal regulations, and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
      • Monitors and tracks federal award expenditures, ensuring adherence to grant terms and conditions.
      • Records and reconciles grant and contract revenue in compliance with ASU 2018-08, ASC 606, and donor restrictions.
      • Maintains accurate tracking and reconciliation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
      • Prepares indirect cost allocations and related journal entries in accordance with federal guidelines and organizational policies.

        Audits, Tax & Reporting

        • Leads the annual Single Audit and ensure strong internal controls over federal funds.
        • Manages external financial audits, including state, local government, and private fund audits.
        • Coordinates benefits-related audits (e.g., 401(k), workers’ compensation).
        • Prepares required tax filings, including IRS Form 990 and related schedules.

          • Implements, documents, and strengthens internal controls and accounting policies.
          • Identifies and mitigates accounting and compliance risks.
          • Stays current on nonprofit accounting standards, federal award guidance, and emerging best practices.
          • Serves as primary backup to the Controller, managing day-to-day operations and non-routine reporting during absences.
          • Promotes collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the accounting team.
          • Supports ad hoc projects and special initiatives as requested by leadership.
