About the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office

The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) is a Principal Staff Assistant (PSA) responsible for the acceleration of the adoption of data, analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate decision advantage across the Department of Defense (DoD). The Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC), Defense Digital Services (DDS), Chief Data Office (CDO), and forward-leaning programs of record including Advana have officially joined together to form one organization‚ the CDAO! The CDAO is established to enable the Military Departments and Services, Joint Staff, Combatant Commands (CCMDs), Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), and other DoD Components, to swiftly introduce new capabilities and effectively experiment with new operational concepts in support of DoD's warfighting missions.

The CDAO Enterprise Platforms and Services Directorate is charged with the advancement of algorithmic warfare and innovation in the Department’s warfighting efforts. EPS will create opportunities, and advance artificial intelligence processes, and drive innovative technology to service members. The AI Engineer within the AI/ML Operations Branch will design, develop, and deploy advanced AI and machine learning models to support mission-critical defense operations. This role requires expertise in AI/ML technologies, data pipeline management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative and secure solutions that drive real-time decision-making.

This position is a DoD Cyber Excepted Service (CES) personnel system position in the Excepted Service under 10 U.S.C. 1599f and does not convey eligibility to be converted to the Competitive Service. The pay grade for this role is GG-0801/0854/1550-15. This position does have an education requirement (details listed below).

What you'll do here:

  • Design, build, and deploy AI and machine learning models to address complex problems in defense operations, focusing on real-time data processing and actionable insights.
  • Develop data pipelines that allow for the efficient extraction, transformation, and loading of large datasets to train AI models.
  • Work closely with software engineers and data scientists to integrate AI models into existing platforms and operational systems.
  • Stay current with the latest AI/ML techniques and tools. Identify and prototype innovative applications of AI that align with the DoD's strategic priorities.
  • Optimize AI models for performance, scalability, and accuracy, ensuring they meet mission-critical requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mission analysts, software developers, and cloud engineers, to deliver AI-powered solutions that support ongoing operations.
  • Ensure that all AI/ML solutions adhere to the DoD’s security protocols and ethical guidelines, especially concerning data privacy and bias mitigation.


Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in AI/ML model development, including deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java.
  • Experience with AI/ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, or Scikit-learn.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and statistical methods.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and deploying AI models in cloud environments.
  • Previous experience working in defense, intelligence, or a mission-driven organization is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version control systems such as Git.
