This is a summer 2025 paid 12-week internship opportunity with the HID team in the Platform Research department at TRI. Please note that this internship will be an in-office role based in Los Altos, CA.
The Team
The Platform Research team, part of the Human Interactive Driving (HID) division, drives the development of research platforms that advance vehicle system design and integrate hardware with software. By accelerating innovation through these platforms, we aim to create safer, more enjoyable driving experiences. Our mission is to achieve a "Software First" methodology by designing hardware platforms with unified architectures and agile integration processes. These advancements enable rapid prototyping and iterative testing of cutting-edge concepts.
The Internship
TRI is seeking a System Integration Engineering Intern to play a key role in envisioning, designing, and developing innovative research platforms. As part of our integrated engineering team, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across TRI to craft innovative solutions. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to engineering projects and programs at every stage of development, from concept to execution.
As a Systems Integration Engineering Intern, you will play a pivotal role in integrating mechanical, electrical, and software systems. This hands-on internship will provide you with valuable experience working collaboratively with team members and cross-functional teams to ensure seamless system integration while advancing your engineering expertise.
In this role, you will work closely with experienced engineers and cross-functional teams to solve and optimize integrated systems while gaining practical experience in system integration across diverse disciplines. In addition, you will also contribute to the design and testing of system components to achieve operational excellence.

Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and integration of hardware and software systems.
- Collaborate with our multidisciplinary teams to learn and address integration challenges.
- Proactively engage in self-improvement and skill development, staying updated with the latest technologies and industry best practices.
- Approach tasks with enthusiasm and a commitment to achieving project objectives while fostering a positive and collaborative attitude.
- Communicate effectively with team members and other departments, promoting an open-minded and cooperative work environment.
- Assist in troubleshooting and resolving integration issues, contributing to the overall product quality.
- Document integration processes, procedures, and outcomes for future reference and improvement.
- Contribute to the continuous enhancement of our integration processes and methodologies.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Master degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- A strong interest in gaining experience in the integration of mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
- Experience working with CAD is preferred.
- Familiarity with the safety-critical system design process (FMEA, FTA) is a bonus.
- Familiarity with C++, Python, MATLAB/SIMULINK, Network (Ethernet/CAN) is a plus. Understanding of ROS or other programming languages is beneficial.
- Demonstrated self-motivation and a strong desire for continuous learning and skill development.
