The Opportunity

Black & Veatch is seeking a motivated and curious Junior Software Development Engineer to join our Digital Product, Analytics, and AI team. This role is ideal for early-career developers who are passionate about building modern digital products that leverage cloud-native technologies and AI to build digital products. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver scalable, high-impact solutions. 

The Team

Black & Veatch’s Business Enablement consists of critical groups that help enable the organizations people, projects, and businesses to be as successful as possible. Functions in this group include Digital & Information Technology, Global Finance, Global Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and Government Affairs and Real Estate and Building Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior engineers to develop, test, and deploy cloud-native applications and services. 
  • Participate in agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives. 
  • Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to code reviews. 
  • Assist in troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving software defects. 
  • Learn and apply best practices in software architecture, DevOps, and CI/CD. 
  • Work with tools such as Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, and AWS services under guidance. 
  • Support integration efforts with AI/ML components and infrastructure systems. 
  • Document technical work and contribute to team knowledge sharing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or related field OR equivalent work experience.
  • In addition to the education requirements, zero to four years related experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience). 
  • 1–3 years of professional software development experience (internships or academic projects welcome). 
  • Familiarity with one or more programming languages such as JavaScript (React/Node.js), Python, or Java. 
  • Exposure to cloud platforms like Azure or AWS through coursework or projects. 
  • Understanding of version control systems (e.g., Git, Bitbucket). 
  • Eagerness to learn, strong problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset. 
  • Experience with CI/CD tools or pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions). 
  • Exposure to AI/ML concepts or data-driven applications. 
  • Interest in infrastructure, energy, or utility domains. 
  • Familiarity with agile development environments.
