We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal Bioinformatics Software Engineer to join our growing team and contribute to the development of high-performance, high-quality NGS bioinformatics algorithms.

As a Principal Bioinformatics Software Engineer specializing in Next Generation Sequencing Bioinformatics at Roche Diagnostics, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and optimizing cutting-edge software tools to extract meaningful insights from genomic data. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects that impact the fields of diagnostics and precision medicine. You will work closely with cross-functional teams of biologists, data scientists, and software engineers to build robust, scalable, and efficient software solutions.

Your Opportunity 

• Design, develop, and implement high-performance bioinformatics algorithms and pipelines for analyzing NGS data, including read processing, alignment, variant calling, quality control and reporting.

• Conduct all aspects of algorithm and pipeline development work including design, implementation, testing, verification, and continuous optimization to ensure accuracy, efficiency and scalability.

• Collaborate with biologists, data scientists, and other software engineers to understand the specific requirements, constraints and other Roche systems to ensure seamless communication and  integration

• Support internal users, evaluate use cases, propose, evaluate and implement solutions 

• Create documentation for algorithms and workflows, visualization of data and present across teams to facilitate knowledge transfer and ensure reproducibility.

• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and learning within the team.

Who you are

• You have a Master or higher degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics or other quantitative fields with over 6 years of experience.

• You have strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, and/or C++ with proven experience in developing bioinformatics algorithms for NGS data analysis.

• Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and libraries.

• Hands-on experience with workflow management systems such as Nextflow, WDL, etc., and proficiency with microservices architecture including the use of Docker and container orchestration.

• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred:

• Experience with cloud infrastructure AWS, Google Cloud is a plus

• Experience with software development tools such as Github, PyTest, CI/CD etc.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Santa Clara, CA is 165,200-306,800   Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
