Overview

THE NEIGHBORHOOD DEFENDER SERVICE OF HARLEM (NDS) is a community-based, client-centered, holistic public defense office located in Harlem, providing criminal, civil, and family representation.   

 

NDS represents residents of Northern Manhattan who are charged with crimes and cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Clients are represented by teams composed of lawyers, investigators, social workers, advocates, and team administrators. NDS also provides pre-arrest representation to clients under threat of arrest. NDS adheres to a client-centered approach to representation that emphasizes a heightened responsiveness to clients’ needs prior to arrest, while a case is pending, and after the case concludes.  NDS is committed to addressing the comprehensive legal and social service needs of clients.  

 

FACILITIES ASSISTANT TEMP – 3 MONTH CONTRACT

We are searching for a TEMPORARY FACILITIES ASSISTANT for a three month contract. The ideal candidate is experienced, motivated individual to join our organization as a Facilities Assistant - Temp for a 3 month contract (05/26/25 - 8/29/25) 35-40 hrs weekly. This position will report directly to the Facilities Manager. As part of our facilities team, you will assist with daily operations, ensure inventory availability, help maintain all equipment, and assist Facilities Manager with administrative duties.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the inventory of supplies and goods, delivering reorder requests to the Facilities Manager.• Ensure meeting rooms are clean and tidy before and after a meeting. Assist with the preparation and layout of rooms.• Receive all incoming packages, deliver, and distribute to all NDS locations.• Handle outgoing mail, packages, and other deliverables.• Report all needed repairs to NDS facilities.• Tag all equipment and furniture, maintaining an inventory database.• Assist with the maintenance of company vehicles: fueling vehicles, transporting cars for repairs, and annual state inspections.• Assist with internal and external space moves. • Deliver packages and confidential contracts to the Criminal Justice Coordinator's office and all other funding sources. • Deliver client Metro Cards to all court offices. • Make copies of client files in all courts within the five boroughs when needed.• Pick up certificates of disposition. Make bank deposits in authorized banks when requested. • Record monthly expense reports and other clerical functions. • Contact vendors for repairs in coordination with the Facilities Manager.

Qualifications

• Must possess a demonstrated commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, social justice issues and/or the communities of Northern Manhattan, including Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. • High School Diploma or equivalent.• Valid New York driver’s license with excellent driving record required. • Ability to lift up to fifty pounds. • Excellent organizational skills: the ability to multi-task, learn quickly, and work independently and productively in a fast-paced and detail-oriented environment. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: the ability to effectively liaise with a variety of people in a multi-cultural environment. • Computer literacy: MS Word, Excel, and MS Outlook preferred

COMPENSATION:

Compensation is commensurate with experience and ranges from $25 - $35 hourly.
