Perform work of a highly skilled and complex nature related to the analysis, detection and repair of defects in interlock and electrical control systems, electrical and electronic devices, three phase motor controls, switchgear, motors and related controls, solid state equipment, computers, solid state communication systems, and other electrical and electronic devices such as: protective relays, current transformers, potential transformers, meters, gauges, process control systems. Assist in engineering studies and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment, and assist engineers in performing other technical services. Actively participates in continuous improvement activities.

Residency Requirements: Successful candidate must reside within 1 hour driving time under normal conditions to Flint Creek Powerplant.

This posting represents multiple positions that offer a range of opportunities for advancement. The minimum qualifications outlined below apply to the Industrial Electrician 4thYr, with increased requirements for the Industrial Electrician.

What you'll do:

Essential Job Functions and Tasks:

The following will be performed with minimal assistance from a journeyman industrial electrician or supervision:

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose problems, calibrate plant electrical equipment, and perform inspection and repair of transformers, circuit unbalance, cable faults, auxiliary and protective relays, circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnects, conveyors, motors, and generators.

  • Perform calculations of power and power factor for three-phase circuits.  Analyze circuits by use of prints or special instruments such as voltage or circuit testers.

  • Install control panels, pull cable, and terminate cable connections. 

  • Locate, inspect, troubleshoot and repair defects in control systems involving electrical, solid state electronic,  mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components, (or plant specific systems) using elementary or wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams or control diagrams, along with knowledge of process control

  • Dismantle, overhaul, reassemble, inspect, test, and install electrical equipment, lighting, and freeze protection systems.

  • Make layouts for installation of equipment, new construction and remodeling of buildings. Learn to check projects for compliance with standards and specifications.

  • Perform electrical circuit breaker trip checks and electrical system interlock checks.

  • Installation and connect test equipment in order to perform tests on boilers, turbines, generators and other power plant equipment.

  • Compile and record data relating to tests and investigations including graphs, curves, and reports.

  • Maintain the analyzing equipment to ensure accurate information for plant operations.

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of facility specific processes and systems.

What we're looking for:

Education requirements listed below:

High School Diploma or GED. Associate degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Controls or a Certificate, Electronics/Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation , or equivalent

Work Experience requirements Listed below:

Without degree, add 5 yrs experience in addition to HS diploma or GED 

With accredited, Associates degree (2 years)  Three years of applicable experience

With Certificate of Completion (18 months) -  Three years of applicable experience

Completion of AEP Apprentice progression  

Licenses/Certifications: Must possess the appropriate State driver's license.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position.

  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays.

  • Minimum long distance travel required but the inspection of remote equipment is a daily requirement for this position.

  • Must respond to callouts in both outage and non-outage work to maintain and support business operational needs and schedules.
