Position Title: Student Employment and Operations Associate.
Department: Library
Classification: Non-Exempt.
FTE: 0.80.
Work Schedule: Early August - late May (41.6 weeks/year). Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; occasional evening and weekend hours required. Travel up to 1% of the work schedule, which includes local (Twin Cities metro area) and national travel. Up to 1 overnight trip per year.
Hourly Rate: $21.00 – $23.00.
Position Overview:
To co-manage daily operations of Rolvaag Library and Halvorson Music Library front service desks, overseeing a team of 40+ student employees in delivering circulation services and frontline research support.
Essential Job Duties:
- Student Supervision and Management – 50% of time
- Manage daily operations of Rolvaag Library and the Music Library public services during all hours of operation (102 hours/week), making decisions to depart from standard policy as judged appropriate.
- Partnering with the Student Employment and Technology Associate, co-manage a comprehensive student onboarding and training plan using multiple modes of delivery: one-on-one training, peer mentoring, online training modules, and interactive assessments.
- Collaborate with colleagues to define learning objectives and provide training in frontline services.
- Provide instruction and in-person training opportunities to student workers in use of the equipment and room booking software.
- Partner with Rolvaag colleagues to hire and schedule a team of 40+ student employees.
- Music Library Operations – 40% of time
- Research, recommend, and participate in the implementation of new or improved Music Library operating procedures.
- Solicit input, research and recommend new services and advocate for Music student and faculty needs in the development of user policies, including library hours and student services.
- Manage Music Library course reserves processing.
- Manage the physical space to ensure a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment including identifying needs and recommending improvements.
- Monitor the appearance of library stacks to ensure materials have been correctly shelved and identify space issues in the stacks, such as overcrowding.
- Attend Music Department meetings as requested by Music Department chairs.
- General Responsibilities – 10% of time
- Serve on library, consortium, and college committees, task forces, and/or working groups.
- Participate in the evaluation and review of new work processes and tools.
- Serve as a backup to other staff as needed and as requested by the supervisor.
- Perform other duties as requested by the library leadership.
- Answer questions and provide recommendations and support to borrowers regarding equipment, including demonstrating operation of equipment as needed.
- Promote services and represent the libraries and IT, including creating media, planning & working at events, contributing ideas, and helping the Events & Engagement committee to make the libraries a welcoming place.
- Work as a member of the Bridge Consortium, collaborating in tandem with peers at Carleton College, to ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained or reduced; participate in all appropriate Bridge working groups, meetings, and functions; and may provide services to Carleton College.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
- Reports to the Head of Access Services.
- This position supervises students.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree
- Experience: 1+ years of supervisory experience or demonstrated leadership skills/abilities; 1+ years of customer service experience; professional experience in higher education or library environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor of Arts in Music or Bachelor of Music preferred.
